During the 2020 Disney Investor Day event, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy made a number of exciting announcements, including a few details about the next Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (2023). Kennedy confirmed that the film would be directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984, I Am the Night), but not give much other information about the movie.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Matthew Robinson, best known for his work with Rickey Gervais on the comedy The Invention of Lying (2019), will write the Rogue Squadron script. Per their report:
Robinson is an interesting choice for writer due to his varied career. Since Invention of Lying, he has fashioned himself to be an in-demand writer in the adventure space, having worked on 2020’s Dylan O’Brien-starring post-apocalyptic creature feature Love and Monsters and the Edge of Tomorrow sequel, Live Die Repeat and Repeat, which is in development at Warner Bros. He also worked on Warners’ remake of Little Shop of Horrors, also in development.
As THR noted, Robinson is a somewhat unexpected choice for this project, particularly as he is best known for his comedic work. Jenkins previously teased her screenwriter, confirming it was a “him”, but not providing a name at that time.
Actor Chris Pine, who has worked with Jenkins on numerous projects, has seemingly not been tapped to star in her upcoming Star Wars movie, but is aware of the storyline. Soon after the film was announced, he shared that the plot is “really, really great”.
Casting details have not been revealed for Rogue Squadron, although Jenkins has shared it will feature “new characters”.
Jenkins’s official Rogue Squadron announcement on Twitter [below] last year included a video of the director at an airfield. Jenkins, the daughter of a fighter pilot, is hoping to make the “greatest fighter pilot movie ever made.”
