Marvel fans are still reeling from the wild turn last week’s episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier took — in which new Captain America John Walker murdered a Flag Smasher with Cap’s shield. Now, it turns out we may have only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the surprises the show has in store.
Recently, Wyatt Russell, the actor behind the current most hated man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shared details about a possible cameo appearance during a BBC Radio 1 interview.
“Have I ever met Chris Evans? I think I have. I don’t think I’ve ‘shook his hand’ met him, but I think I’ve walked by him somewhere and made eye contact. That counts as being a stalker, that doesn’t count as meeting anybody. But, I guess it would. You just gotta wait until the end of the series and then everybody will be like, ‘Oh, wow.'”
While this isn’t the first time rumors have swirled that Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers will appear in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it is the first time an actor from the series has fueled the fire.
It would make sense for Rogers — in some form or another — to make a cameo in the new hit MCU series. As we prepare for the upcoming Loki series (June 2021) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), there is, of course, the possibility that the Marvel multiverse could come into play, and we could see Rogers from an alternate timeline.
Perhaps more likely, though, is the possibility of a flashback sequence. When Rogers gave Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) his shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), it was because he knew Wilson embodied everything that Captain America should be — and everything that John Walker is not.
Throughout the show, Wilson has grappled with the fact that he gave up Captain America’s shield. Thanks to a merchandise release, we already know he will get it back at some point — probably sooner rather than later with only two episodes left in the limited series.
There is certainly the potential for Wilson to flash back to a memory of Rogers (who went on to lead a happy life with his wife, Peggy Carter) before he takes possession of the shield.
Thanks to series creator and head writer Malcolm Spellman, we know that a major cameo is expected to occur in Episode 5 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Whether or not the person who is going to make fans “cry” is Steve Rogers, we’ll have to wait to find out.
For now, Disney+ subscribers have a lot to look forward to this Friday as Wilson and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) continue their quest to take down Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) and the Flag Smashers, all while Zemo is on the run and the Dora Milaje are out for blood.
Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.” The all-new series is directed by Kari Skogland; Malcolm Spellman is the head writer.
