Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is arguably one of the world’s most iconic and popular roller coasters, first opening at the original Disneyland Resort in 1979. Over the last several decades, the ride has only grown in popularity, offering guests one of the “wildest” rides in the whole wilderness and the Disney parks in general.
However, the fun came to an abrupt stop for several riders this week, with Disneyland Paris’ version of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closing as guests were riding.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad shut down at Disneyland Park in Paris on Monday, August 26, for an unknown reason, resulting in a complete evacuation of the roller coaster.
Twitter/X user travelttmagic shared the photo, which shows at least nine guests exiting the ride. All versions of the coaster share similarities, though Disneyland Paris’ version features significantly more vegetation and exterior theming than its American counterparts.
Guests can be seen walking away from the coaster and down a small hill near a body of water.

Ride breakdowns are somewhat common, not just at Disney but every theme park, though full-on evacuations are significantly rarer. What makes this breakdown more unusual is the fact that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has faced technical issues recently, with the Disneyland Paris Resort closing the ride for several hours earlier this week.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has faced unexpected downtime at Disneyland Paris throughout the year and was evacuated on multiple occasions.
It’s unknown what caused the initial closure or this specific breakdown, but guests can be assured that Disney takes incidents like this seriously, ensuring riders remain as safe and as calm as possible.
Given the amount of breakdowns and technical difficulties, it’s possible Disneyland Paris guests will see Big Thunder Mountain Railroad close for refurbishment in the near future.

The Disneyland Paris Resort is currently receiving several large-scale refurbishments and upgrades. These upgrades extend to both the resort’s Walt Disney Studios and Disneyland Parks, as well as the resort’s shopping and dining area, Disney Village.
During Disney’s D23 event in August, the company shared updates on a variety of upcoming theme park projects and confirmed when Paris’ World of Frozen expansion would open.
Disney also announced a brand-new log flume attraction based on The Lion King (1994) is coming to Disneyland Paris.
