Taking a Walt Disney World Resort vacation right now is more expensive than ever. Theme park tickets start at $119 per day, and get more expensive depending on which park you visit, with the Magic Kingdom being the most expensive.

Your park day gets even more expensive if you decide to add the Lightning Lane Multi Pass to your ticket. Just one day at the theme parks can quickly add up to hundreds of dollars.

Guests want to get as much out of their Disney day as possible, and even the slightest hiccup can throw things out of whack. And what happened at the Magic Kingdom on the evening of February 10 was way more than a little hiccup.

At approximately 6 p.m., the Magic Kingdom experienced a massive power outage, and most of the rides and attractions went offline. As a result, thousands of guests were forced to either leave the park or wait around, hoping the rides would open again.

When the outage occurred, the following attractions had to temporarily close:

  • The Barnstormer
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
  • Country Bear Musical Jamboree
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant
  • “it’s a small world”
  • Mad Tea Party
  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Peter Pan’s Flight
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Prince Charming Regal Carrousel
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  • Space Mountain
  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
  • Tomorrowland Speedway
  • Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid
  • Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress
  • Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room

The Magic Kingdom closed at 10 p.m., and as of 8:30 p.m., those rides all remained closed.

There were only a handful of attractions that were not affected by the outage.

Because so few attractions were open after the outage, the wait times for the rides that were not closed quickly skyrocketed. Guests were not allowed to join queues for attractions that were down, but those who were in line were able to remain there and wait to see if the ride opened back up.

There was an After-Hours party at the Magic Kingdom, and thankfully, many of the rides appeared to be back up and operational. The After-Hours event began at 10 p.m. and ended at 1 a.m.

We do not know if partial refunds on park tickets or Lightning Lane passes were issued due to the outage.
