This week, Walt Disney World Resort guests received an unexpected addition to their ride on the Tomorrowland Speedway at Magic Kingdom Park.
Tomorrowland Speedway is a divisive attraction among Disney Parks fans. Kiddos love the chance to rule the road, but some adult Disney Park guests get tired of smelling gasoline from as far as Mad Tea Party or Space Mountain.
While some Walt Disney World Resort guests would love to see the Tomorrowland Speedway go, Walt Disney Imagineering hasn’t hinted at retheming the Lightning Lane Multi Pass ride. Its Disneyland Resort counterpart, Autopia, will swap to electric power in 2026.

Walt Disney Imagineers have bigger plans for Magic Kingdom Park. At D23 Expo 2024, Chairman of Disney Experiences Josh D’Amaro announced two significant additions to the original Central Florida Disney park.

The first is a Villains Land located “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.” The second is that Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America will be replaced by two Cars (2006) rides. Construction permits have already been filed for the Frontierland expansions.

As some Disney Parks fans eagerly await new rides, others enjoy the more historic areas of Magic Kingdom Park. Redditor u/wjnukccfc recently jumped in line for a nostalgic trip on the Tomorrowland Speedway. Unfortunately, the situation took a dark turn.
The Disney Park guest shared two photos of a near-empty Tomorrowland Speedway looking eery, dark, and wet. They became trapped on the Magic Kingdom Park ride during a typical Central Florida rainstorm:

Tomorrowland Speedway will not operate if conditions are unsafe for guests. Most outdoor Disney Park rides stay open in the rain but must temporarily close if lightning or heavy winds impede safe operations.

Still, when visiting Magic Kingdom Park in the rain, it might be better to choose another attraction in Tomorrowland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland, Adventureland, or Frontierland, or take a shopping break on Main Street, U.S.A.
