Stranger Things is one of the biggest hits to ever land on Netflix, itself the most popular streaming platform in the world. Therefore, the Duffer Brothers’ hit show is up there on the list of the most-watched television series of the last decade. But, despite that, the show is coming to an end with the upcoming season 5, and big changes are coming.

One major recent development for Stranger Things season 5 is the casting of legendary action film actor Linda Hamilton, best known for her role as the immortal Sarah Connor in the Terminator franchise. While the showrunners have kept details about the upcoming season as quiet as possible, it has been persistently rumored that Hamilton will be playing an adult version of Eleven, the psychokinetic breakout character of the show portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown.

Stranger Things has a huge cast, and while season 1 primarily focused on the central quintet of Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp, the ensemble has grown with each new batch of episodes. Over the years, the show has prominently featured Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Sadie Sink, Bret Gelman, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Matthew Modine, Dacre Montgomery, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, Maya Hawke, Jamie Campbell Bower, Eduardo Franco, and Joseph Quinn.

But despite all that, it is inarguable that Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven is the center of the show. That makes it all the more remarkable that Stranger Things season 5 may be replacing her with a different version of the character, played by Linda Hamilton. Given the reality-bending nature of the show, it is even entirely possible that the two Eleven Variants will actually interact, but we will just have to see how the season unfolds.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Linda Hamilton revealed that she had contemplated retiring from Hollywood before being cast in the final season of Stranger Things. That says a lot about the importance of her role in season 5, further reinforcing the rumor that she might be playing Grown-Up Eleven.

Linda Hamilton said:

“I literally felt like I was an actress getting my first meaningful part [with Stranger Things]. It’s funny, how it recycles. It’s not that I felt forgotten, but I was actually talking about retirement, not because there isn’t enough to do, but just I’m tired of being tough.”

“So I had complained to my agent. I was getting ready to do season three of Resident Alien. I was like, “Dude, I don’t even know if I’m going to get there. I hurt.” (Laughs.) And he’s like, “Oh, you don’t mean that.” When I said retirement, cut to two weeks or so later, Stranger Things called him and said, “Is Linda Hamilton available from June to June?” And he went, “Yes.” He didn’t even ask me.”

The scheduled Stranger Things season 5 2024 release date has been scrapped by Netflix due to unspecified delays and apparently, filming is months from being wrapped. We are going to have to wait a long time to see Linda Hamilton show up as Eleven (or some new character), but we’re glad she decided not to quit Hollywood first.
