Over the last two decades, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has grown into something unfathomably large, encompassing dozens of films and multiple television shows, all working together to create one (mostly) cohesive storyline. This storyline started all the way back in 2008 with Iron Man, which stars the impeccable Robert Downey Jr.

While audiences were unaware at the time, this film kicked off what we now know as The Infinity Saga, which ends with Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Since this saga ended, a new storyline has been built called The Multiverse Saga, which truly started back with the season one finale of Loki, which you can stream on Disney+. The most recent addition to the MCU came with 2023’s release of The Marvels, which stars Brie Larson (Carol Danvers), Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), and Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau).

Unfortunately, many fans and critics alike have not loved the new direction that Marvel is headed in with The Multiverse Saga. The last few MCU movies have been critically panned and have also failed to resonate all that well at the box office.

With a budget of around $200 million, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania only managed to make around $400 million during its theatrical run. In 2022, Marvel fans saw the release of Thor: Love and Thunder. While this fourth entry in the Thor franchise managed to do well at the box office, it also failed to resonate with fans and was torn apart by critics. This was shocking, especially when considering the fantastic direction director Taika Waititi took the character in 2017 with Thor: Ragnarok.

Many argued that the studio gave Waititi too much creative freedom with Thor: Love and Thunder, with its leading man, Chris Hemsworth himself, admitting that even he found Thor: Love and Thunder  to be “too silly.”

Following the reception to Thor: Love and Thunder, many outlets began reporting on Taika Waititi’s departure from the franchise entirely. Many factors played a part in these rumors, with Waititi reportedly working on a new Star Wars film, which was ultimately canceled. Waititi has been an incredibly busy filmmaker in Hollywood, writing, directing, and even starring in films.

Inside the Magic reported on Taika’s departure from Marvel earlier in 2023, and now, it’s finally been confirmed by the man himself.

Taika Waititi first informed Business Insider that he won’t be involved in a fifth Thor film during a press event for Waititi’s upcoming film Next Goal Wins (2023).

“I know that I won’t be involved…I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.” Waititi clarified that he won’t be involved in a Thor project if it took place within the next six years and while he sounded open to returning to the character, this answer significantly dashed our hopes of him hopping back into the MCU.

“So that’s six, seven years gone,” Waititi said about his current slate of upcoming projects. “I’d imagine another ‘Thor’ would be a lot sooner than that…But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris.”

Taika Waititi has become one of the most acclaimed directors and writers working in Hollywood, working on films like Jojo Rabbit (2019) and What We Do in the Shadows (2014), as well as the HBO program Our Flag Means Death.
