The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has been one of the most popular entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its debut in 2014. Bringing new characters like Star-Lord and Thanos’ daughter Gamora to the live-action Marvel Universe, the titular Guardians will soon be starring in brand-new projects coming to theaters and Disney+.

Not only has director James Gunn delivered a quirky, fun, yet emotionally heartfelt duo of Marvel movies so far, but the Guardians helmer has also not been shy at sharing behind-the-scenes information regarding the Hollywood cast. This week has been no different.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) brought together the ragtag group of heroes (?) to the MCU for the first time. Consisting of Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), and villains (?) like Nebula (Karen Gillan), the comic book movie captured the love of fans with its stylistic production, humor, and heart. The sophomore movie then introduced characters like Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Ego (Kurt Russell).

Since 2014, the Guardians have returned in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Some of the characters will next star in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) alongside Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Jane Foster/Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman), and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) before the group gets their very own seasonal feature, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022) on Disney+.

The third installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), will reportedly close out the Marvel franchise and may even include the deaths of some fan-favorite characters like Bautista’s Drax.

Actor Dave Bautista has played the MCU’s Drax character since 2014, and despite the commercial success of Guardians, the former professional wrestler has frequently spoken out about some of the discomforts of becoming the popular alien including the “shirtless thing” as well as the lack of exploring Drax’s backstory.

The actor was also a fervent supporter of Gunn when The Walt Disney Company fired the director following the resurfacing of controversial social media posts including offensive tweets, and subsequently praised the House of Mouse and the Marvel studio over their decision to rehire him for the upcoming film slate.

It turns out that Bautista also has real-life superpowers — at least according to James Gunn.

Twitter user, Kyle J. (@KyleJerichow), shared information regarding a colleague’s previous employment with Marvel Studios:

A senior tech at work today, who worked on @Guardians #GoTG told me about the gigantic rig they made to control the milano, how @prattprattpratt constantly sings on set, and how cool it was to talk with @DaveBautista @RookerOnline [Michael Rooker] @seangunn and @JamesGunn at the wrap party

Gunn then responded to the tweet with a rather surprising account of what happened at this Guardians of the Galaxy wrap party.

That wrap party was fun! My primary memory was when a crew member was harassing one of our stand-ins & @seangunn was protecting her & the guy got pushy with Sean & @DaveBautista tapped the harasser’s chest & he FLEW ACROSS THE ROOM because Dave actually has real-life superpowers!

While Gunn shared that the wrap party was “fun”, a later tweet does reveal why his brother and actor, Sean Gunn, intervened, and why Bautista ended up in a physical altercation with the crew member. He said:

Dave (and Sean) were most angry at the dude for picking up one of our wonderful stand ins by her breasts. Not kidding.

Bautista has yet to comment on the sequence of events.

The long delay between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has largely been attributed to Gunn’s firing leaving him open to direct the DC Extended Universe film, The Suicide Squad (2021). Warner Bros. was quick to snap Gunn up after Disney let him go.

Both Gunn and Bautista have confirmed it will be their last outing for the Guardians franchise, but Marvel fans still have at least three projects to see them in before things get wrapped up. It is also likely that the characters may continue to appear in Bryan Andrews’ What If…?. The second season will likely debut next year, and if Season 1 is anything to go by, we can expect at least some of the Guardians of the Galaxy to show up in the series — even if they aren’t voiced by the same actors…
