One upcoming Marvel project that is perhaps one of the most highly anticipated is the future reboot of the X-Men franchise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on the fan-favorite mutants isn’t expected any time soon but Kevin Feige’s team at Marvel Studios are sure to be planning something huge for the characters’ entry into the MCU.

With nothing X-Men related on the horizon at least for the time being — apart from a few easter eggs here and there — one actor from the original film franchise just caused chaos on the internet after seemingly posting a tease of his X-Men character comeback.

Debuting over 20 years ago, 20th Century Fox’s X-Men brought characters like Cyclops (James Marsden), Storm (Halle Berry), and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to the big screen. Bryan Singer’s movie launched the X-Men film franchise which has since gone on to spawn a huge slate of follow-up movies like X-Men: First Class (2011) and Dark Phoenix (2019). Ryan Reynolds’ popular Deadpool movies also exist in this same shared universe.

Everything changed in 2019 when The Walt Disney Company obtained 20th Century Fox — now 20th Century Studios — meaning the rights to Fox’s slate of characters became owned by Disney and its subsidiary, Marvel Studios. The studio that produced the mammoth MCU would now own popular characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby initially introduced the world to the X-Men through the Marvel comic books, and it is in the X-Men’s ability to stand the testament of time that poses the greatest opportunity for Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. With an ever-changing line-up of mutants, the X-Men’s entry into the MCU could come from anywhere and include anyone. There is even a theory that Wanda Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch already wiped out most of the mutants, but for now, that is just speculation.

It could be argued that Feige won’t bring back any of the actors from Fox’s original movies, but we have seen with the continued teasing of Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s casting in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) that it’s a never-say-never world over at Marvel. In addition, the arrival of the MCU’s Multiverse through shows like Loki and the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), could pave the way for some familiar X-Men faces to return.

In fact, Hugh Jackman himself just broke the internet after posting two photos online that could point to him being included in at least one upcoming MCU project.

Sharing photos to his Instagram story, The Greatest Showman (2017) actor, first posted a picture of his famous adamantium claws followed by a shot of him and Marvel President Kevin Feige. While these photos aren’t evidence of his MCU arrival by any means, it is interesting that the Wolverine actor decided to post these no-context images back-to-back. And, as ever, the internet could not handle it.

For context here are the images the actor shared via Phase Zero’s (@PhaseZeroCB) Twitter:

#Wolverine with Kevin Feige??

@blurayangel took to Twitter to share their excitement about this Marvel legacy actor joining Feige’s MCU upon seeing the striking image of Wolverine’s claws.

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine on screen together in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would be the most epic thing in the history of comic book movies

Another user, Logan (@DiamondSpiderP), weighed in on the Wolverine tease.

So, Hugh Jackman might be back as Wolverine, probably for Multiverse of Madness. But, like, I kinda hope he’s gonna be the MCU’s Wolverine. I feel like I’m alone on that, but idc, he’s a perfect Wolverine and I’d love to see him as the MCU’s Wolverine.

Sharing to Twitter also, this Marvel fan (@younityyy), gave their idea of how the mutant might enter the MCU.

Give me a Deadpool and Wolverine buddy cop type movie showing Deadpool’s exit from the Fox Marvel Universe and him entering The MCU.

It wasn’t all happiness and love though over Jackman’s potential Marvel superhero return. Stephan K. (@Krosecz) shared their thoughts.

oh boy do I really love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and also do not even remotely want him playing Logan in the MCU

@hahahamid also weighed in on this possible hint at Jackman’s return.

Wolverine. Again? After butchering Jean Grey’s Dark Phoenix? I’d rather watch Scott/Cyclops or Gambit’s origin story. Even better, how Ororo Munroe becomes Storm. Enough with this fork-finger dude. ENOUGH!

The Jackman/Wolverine camp seems fairly split between fans wanting the Australian actor to reprise his legendary role in the MCU and others wanting a new face, or a new character altogether, to signal the X-Men’s arrival into the greater Marvel Universe.

What can be said though, is that with the Multiverse now opening (literally) so many doors, it’s a rather exciting time to be a Marvel fan.

What do you think about Hugh Jackman possibly returning as Wolverine? Let us know in the comments!
