Marvel fans are counting down the days until Black Widow hits movie theaters on July 9, 2021. Many are speculating at what might befall Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) in the prequel movie, and who is under Taskmaster’s skull mask. Now one actor may have dropped another hint about what MCU fans can expect in the upcoming Black Widow movie.
Black Widow’s first — and possibly only — solo Marvel movie will drop on Disney+ Premier Access for an additional fee of $29.99 on the same day as it hit theaters after a series of delays in the Black Widow release date.
It will introduce Golden Globe nominee, actor David Harbour (Chief Jim Hopper from Stranger Things) as Red Guardian/Alexei Shostakov, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, and O-T Fagbenle as Mason.
We know that Black Widow will take the SHIELD spy back to her Russian origins to confront her history with Red Room — the program that trained the Black Widows like Natasha, Yelena, and Melina. From there, the team will struggle against Taskmaster, a villain with the ability to immediately imitate his opponent’s abilities.
Marvel fans are hoping for more on Black Widow’s backstory including how she first bet Clint Barton/ (Jeremy Renner).
The tone has been called “horrifying” and Marvel’s official description of the movie read:
“In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down [presumably Taskmaster], Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.”
Now, David Harbour dropped a new teaser in the wake of character posters that were dropped this week. And, he may have revealed some details in his Instagram post that Marvel fans were previously unaware of:
“Ursa, Yelena, Nat, CD, Sputnik, I and all the rest of the winter guard look forward to sharing a popcorn bag and big ole screen in a dark theater with ya on July.”
But Who Is the Winter Guard?
In Marvel Comics, the Winter Guard is Russia’s answer to the Avengers, they first appeared in Iron Man Vol.3 #9 in 1998. David Harbour’s Red Guardian was the leader of the team at various points. The team was formed after the fall of the USSR, which in Marvel Comics happened after it was infiltrated by Eternals.
The Winter Guard has defeated the Mandarin, the Presence, and ULTIMATUM throughout their history, and members include Yelena Belova as Black Widow and Melina Vostokoff as Iron Maiden. Other notable members include Crimson Dynamo and Ursa Major, both of whom were mentioned in Harbour’s post but were not previously confirmed to show up in Black Widow.
Ursa Major AKA Mikhail Uriokovich Ursus is a mutant with the ability to turn into a giant brown bear. The longer he stays in his bear form, the more of his human intelligence and control he loses. After being imprisoned in a Russian gulag, he became an aggressive alcoholic.
An Easter egg for Ursa Major did appear in the first Black Widow trailer when fans spotted a bear standing on its hind legs for a brief moment, but his appearance was never confirmed by Marvel Studios.
Crimson Dynamo is one of the founding members of the Winter Guard. There have been main characters who took up the name including the father of Iron Man 2 (2010) villain Whiplash/ Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke). Dimitri Bukharin is one of the main versions of Crimson Dynamo.
Crimson Dynamo is essentially the Russian Iron Man, just as Red Guardian is their Captain America. CD, as Harbour calls him, done the armor which gives him superhero strength. Just like Iron Man armor, it is equipped with all sorts of weapons.
As for Sputnik, Harbour does not mean the satellite but rather a synthezoid like Vision. Only Sputnik was created after a human named Vostok had an encounter with alien technology which transformed him into a form of synthetic life.
Fans have waited for Black Widow for almost two years now and Marvel boss Kevin Feige has kept a tight lid on spoilers during the pandemic. If these characters appear in Black Widow it may only be as brief cameos. If it was not for David Harbour specifically dropping these names in his post, it could have been written off as the members of the Winter Guard we know will be appearing like Red Guardian, Yelena, and Melina.
Let us know in the comments below if you want to see the Winter Guard in Black Widow. And hopefully, Actor David Harbour resists the urge to spoil what happens to Chief Jim Hopper in Netflix’s Stranger Things season 4.
