At Disney’s Investors Day on December 10, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced the next Star Wars theatrical release will be 2023’s Rogue Squadron, directed by Patty Jenkins.
Jenkins took to Twitter to confirm the news with the following video:

Jenkins — perhaps best known for Wonder Woman 1984 — will be the first woman to direct a Star Wars feature film. This aligns with Kennedy’s previous statements about hiring female filmmakers being a major priority for Lucasfilm moving forward.
The Verge shares some key details about Rogue Squadron:
Rogue Squadrons will follow a group of fighter pilots as they band together through thick and thin to defend good against evil. It’s a fan adored part of the Star Wars universe — one that prominently featured in a popular Nintendo 64 game — and will help Lucasfilm leave the Skywalker Trilogy behind on the big screen.
In the teaser video Jenkins shared on social media, Star Wars fans get a brief, behind-the-scenes glimpse of one of the Rogue Squadron sets.
While we aren’t likely to see Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) on the big screen again, this sounds like an incredible move for the Star Wars franchise.
Fans are already reacting to the news of the Rogue Squadron project online and the excitement is palpable!
I’m Dr. Manhattan shared a Poe Dameron GIF with the caption:
“Prepare your ships. Good luck and may the force be with you.”
