It was then confirmed by Frank Pallotta who shared the following message from a Disney spokesperson:
“Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for ‘Mulan’ as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world.”

This news follows AMC Theaters’ announcement that they will further delay their reopening until Mid-August, and it is only the latest time Disney has delayed the premiere of its live-action epic.
We at Inside the Magic have kept up with Disney’s release plans for Mulan. Originally set to be released on March 27, 2020, the global pandemic caused Disney to push the release back to July 24, a date originally reserved for Disney’s action-comedy, Jungle Cruise. It was then pushed back further to August 21, 2020, before–now–being delayed indefinitely.
But Disney’s delay comes after recent speculation that another premiere delay was on the way. Doug Creutz, a Cowen analyst, told The Hollywood Reporter, “We now expect domestic theaters to be largely closed until mid-2021, in part because we don’t think studios will be interested in releasing their largest movies into a capacity-constrained footprint.”
While there has been some debate, there are still no official plans to follow the same plan as Artemis Fowl and forgo cinematic release all together for a Disney+ premiere.
Mulan is the latest of a long line of live-action remakes Disney has made of its animated classics and follows the box office successes of The Lion King and Aladdin. Below is the official description for the upcoming live-action film:
“Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s Mulan, in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.”
Only time will tell when Disney fans will get to see Mulan in theaters.
