Robert Downey Jr. (aka Iron Man/Tony Stark) has won over the hearts of many people across the world thanks to his iconic role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel fans (and Disney) have been pushing for Robert Downey Jr. to receive a nomination for the Oscars for his role in Avengers: Endgame as the iconic Marvel superhero who sacrificed himself for humanity. The love and support the Marvel actor has received throughout the entire summer has been overwhelming as fans across the world struggle with the reality that the role of superhero Iron Man and Tony Stark is no more.

Regardless of the fact Robert Downey Jr. may not be returning to the big screen in the MCU, his role is still receiving plenty of attention, especially now, since Robert Downey Jr. can add another award to the list thanks to his win last night at the People’s Choice Awards for Male Movie Star of 2019. Of course, we all knew he would thank the costars, writers, and directors of Avengers: Endgame, but there was someone else Robert Downey Jr. just had to mention and pay gratitude for during his acceptance speech.

“Well look, I just got to come up here and open the show so I’ll just say thank you Disney, thank you Marvel, thank you Russo brothers,” Robert Downey Jr. said. “And most of all, to the late, great Stan Lee, this is for you, buddy.”

Robert Downey Jr. even spilled some other details earlier in the evening about the iconic “I am Iron Man” quote during the scene where Tony Stark takes out Thanos. It turns out it wasn’t always going to be that way. Downey Jr., joked that his first choice for that iconic quote would be “Oh snap!” but the according to director Joe Russo, the editor produced the line last and the production was scrambling to get everything set in stone and ready for that iconic moment.

“Tony used to not say anything in that moment. And we were in the editing room going, ‘He has to say something. This a character who has lived and died by quips,’” Russo explained. “And we just couldn’t, we tried a million different last lines. Thanos was saying, ‘I am inevitable.’ And our editor Jeff Ford, who’s been with us all four movies and is an amazing storyteller, said, ‘Why don’t we just go full circle with it and say, ‘I am Iron Man?’’ And we’re like, ‘Get the cameras! We have to shoot this tomorrow.’”

Regardless of how the scene came to be, it is one for the books and Iron Man will forever be in our hearts. Congratulations to Robert Downey Jr. We love you, 3000.
