The story of Peter Parker from Queens and the iconic lesson that “with great power comes great responsibility” has become widely known. Multiple actors have brought New York’s beloved Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man to life on screen, drawing from the rich Marvel Comics legacy created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

Spider-Man’s cinematic journey began with Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, which spanned from 2002 to 2007 (which may be revived soon). Andrew Garfield later stepped into the role with The Amazing Spider-Man series, starting in 2012 and continuing with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014.

Tom Holland is the latest actor to portray Peter Parker, interacting with reimagined versions of classic characters like Aunt May and MJ — with the path wide open for new iterations of Harry Osborn, the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.
Under Kevin Feige’s direction, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has a unique partnership with Sony. It is now supported by its parent company, The Walt Disney Company, which has canonized all these universes as part of the MCU. Holland made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War (2016), followed by his first solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, in 2017.
But Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man/Tony Stark and Chris Evans’ Captain America/Steve Rogers stepping down and the dawn of the Multiverse Saga, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker isn’t the only iteration of the fan-favorite web-slinger.

A new report from insider Jeff Sneider is indicating that the Spider-Verse as we know it is hanging by a particularly shaky thread.
In Sneider’s subscription platform, The Insneider, the scooper claims that Sony’s fan-favorite, award-winning animated Spider-Man franchise led by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) led Spider-Verse franchise, is now in difficult waters.
Previously, it was reported from other sources that the creative duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller had had a disagreement with Sony Pictures over the budgeting of the Spider-Man television series they had been contracted to produce over a five-year period.
This led to Sony reportedly axing their deal, with the two-year developed Silk: Spider-Society totally scrapped and Nicolas Cage vehicle Spider-Noir/Noir the only thing making it to the small screen (via Amazon).
Now, the larger Spider-Verse appears to be in jeopardy.

Following Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), the direct sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse would have continued from Across the Spider-Verse‘s cliffhanger — but now even that may not be in the cards.
Sneider now reports that nearly all of the existing Beyond the Spider-Verse material is getting scrapped for “creative reasons,” with its projected release date indefinitely delayed and “unlikely to release before 2027”. The text of the report was shared by u/magikarpcatcher on Reddit’s r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers subreddit:
Per Jeff Snieder Sony scrapped most of Beyond the Spiderverse for creative reasons, and with Spider-Man 4 set for 2026, BTSV is now unlikely to release before 2027
“If Beyond the Spider-Verse was hitting theaters next summer, we would’ve heard about it by now, as Sony would’ve assigned it a release date.
2026 seems perfectly doable, but I’m told that it would be extremely unlikely that Sony would want to release an animated Spider-Man movie and a live-action Spider-Man movie in the same calendar year, as the studio is better off staggering those two franchises.
So not only is 2027 more likely for that reason alone, but over Labor Day Weekend, I heard that Sony scrapped most of Beyond the Spider-Verse for creative reasons, and because of that decision, the movie would be unlikely to debut before 2027 given the detailed animation it requires.
While the Beyond the Spider-Verse team was taken aback by the change in direction, I’m told they’re relieved to have more time to work on the sequel, as it’s important to all involved that they stick the landing on this Oscar-winning franchise.”

More on the Spider-Verse
Marvel’s Stan Lee is well-known for his belief that anyone can be Spider-Man, a concept brought to life most vividly in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, produced by Amy Pascal, Christopher Miller, and Phil Lord.
This expansive “Spider-Verse” introduces a vast array of Spider-People from across the Multiverse, including Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), Hobie Brown (Daniel Kaluuya), and Spider-Cat (Amanda Troop).
Nicolas Cage, star of Leaving Las Vegas, voiced the black-and-white, smooth-talking Spider-Man variant, Spider-Noir, in Into the Spider-Verse (2018), as one of many memorable “Spider-People” in the Marvel Multiverse. Unfortunately, it seems that the Spider-Noir series may be the last project for the duo in the Spider-Verse and Sony’s Spider-Man franchise.
