Choo Choo — All aboard Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway!
We are so excited for the debut of Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ brand new dark ride attraction, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which will open to the public on March 4. But just when we thought this couldn’t get any more exciting, Disney proves us wrong and gives us even more news about the upcoming attraction.
According to OC Register, The Walt Disney Imagineering crew have been working extra hard in bringing several “historical nods and hidden Easter Eggs” to the upcoming attraction. Because of this, Walt Disney Imagineering decided to go even bigger and incorporate a second storyline into the main storyline in the attraction! (TWO storylines in ONE attraction?!)
“This attraction actually has a B story,” Walt Disney Imagineering’s Kevin Rafferty stated. “First one ever that has a B story in addition to the A story. It’s very clear and it’s very fun.”
It looks as though this second storyline within Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be incorporated into the initial and primary story, which is inspired by the new Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts, which are currently streaming on Disney+.
“Everybody will see it,” Rafferty said during his interview at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. “It’s subtle, but you will see it.”
Rafferty is an executive creative director at Imagineering and is currently overseeing all the work being done on Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. “This is the kind of attraction that there’s so much going on,” Rafferty said. “Every scene is so jam packed. It’s 10 pounds of potatoes in a five-pound bag.”
This is by far Rafferty’s first line of work with Disney as he has also helped design and oversee Radiator Springs Racers, Toy Story Midway Mania, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Mickey’s Philharmagic and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage!
Though we are still sad to see it replace The Great Movie Ride, this new attraction looks like it will exceed our expectations and we simply cannot wait to ride Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway when it debuts on March 4.
More About Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Attraction
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is an upcoming dark ride attraction, which will be located inside the Chinese Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It will be replacing the popular Disney attraction, The Great Movie Ride, which was also located within the Chinese Theater.
Disney Guests will begin their experience when they are first transported into a colorful cartoon world. The Chinese Theater will serve as “the magic portal” as Disney guests are fully emerged into Mickey’s Toontown.

As you make your way to the “premiere” of Perfect Picnic in the attraction, you’ll move through the theater’s lobby and see whimsical posters of existing award-winning Mickey cartoon shorts created specifically for the attraction by Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney Television Animation.
