Planning a Walt Disney World vacation usually means deciding which attractions to prioritize, where to eat, and how to beat the Florida heat. This summer, though, some visitors are adding another consideration to their vacation plans after a growing Cyclospora outbreak spread across the United States and reached Florida.

While there is no evidence linking Walt Disney World to any Cyclospora infections, the outbreak has become significant enough that some guests say they are changing how they dine during their trips, especially when it comes to salads and other raw produce.

With Florida now reporting dozens of confirmed and suspected cases, travelers are paying closer attention to public health recommendations before heading to the parks.

Florida Cases Continue to Rise

According to the Florida Department of Health, Florida has reported at least 60 confirmed or suspected cases of cyclosporiasis since the beginning of 2026. Most of those infections were reported during June, suggesting the outbreak accelerated as summer began.

The illness is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which infects the digestive system and can lead to prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms.

Among the most common symptoms are:

  • Frequent watery diarrhea
  • Explosive bowel movements
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

Symptoms generally appear about one week after consuming contaminated food or water, although they can sometimes take up to two weeks to develop. Because of that delayed onset, health officials say it is often difficult to determine exactly where someone became infected.

Disney World Has Not Been Linked to the Outbreak

It is important to note that Disney World has not been identified as the source of any Cyclospora cases.

Health officials have not connected the current outbreak to the Disney parks, Disney Resort hotels, or any Disney-operated restaurants. In fact, investigators are still working to determine exactly what food source is responsible for the national outbreak.

Previous Cyclospora outbreaks have been associated with contaminated fresh produce rather than restaurants themselves.

Disney also grows some fruits and vegetables on property through its agricultural program showcased during Living With the Land at EPCOT. However, the resort also relies on large commercial suppliers to serve millions of meals every year.

Fresh Produce Remains the Biggest Concern

Although investigators have not identified the exact source behind the 2026 outbreak, experts believe lettuce and salad greens are emerging as leading suspects in several states.

Historically, Cyclospora outbreaks have been associated with foods including:

  • Lettuce
  • Mixed salad greens
  • Cilantro
  • Basil
  • Green onions
  • Snow peas
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Mangoes
  • Vegetable trays

The parasite spreads when fresh produce becomes contaminated before reaching consumers, often through contaminated irrigation water.

Unlike many bacteria, simply rinsing produce under water may not completely eliminate the parasite, although thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables remains one of the best available precautions. Cooking produce to a safe internal temperature is considered even more effective.

Disney Guests Are Paying Attention

Although Disney has not issued any warnings regarding park dining, discussions across Facebook groups, Reddit communities, X, and Disney planning forums show that many upcoming visitors are taking extra precautions.

Some guests say they are temporarily skipping side salads that normally accompany quick-service meals.

Others have mentioned ordering cooked vegetables instead of raw greens or choosing sandwiches without lettuce during their vacations.

Several travelers have also said they are avoiding pre-packaged salads entirely until investigators identify the source of the outbreak.

Many longtime Disney fans note that they aren’t avoiding Disney restaurants specifically. Instead, they’re applying the same precautions they are taking at home while the investigation continues nationwide.

The conversations reflect caution rather than panic, with most visitors acknowledging that no connection has been established between Disney dining locations and the outbreak itself.

Why Summer Is Often Worse

Florida health officials say reports of cyclosporiasis typically increase between May and September.

That’s partly because fresh produce consumption increases during warmer months, while imported fruits and vegetables associated with previous outbreaks are also more widely available.

The CDC also notes that Cyclospora behaves differently than many common stomach illnesses. Because the parasite requires time outside the human body before becoming infectious, person-to-person spread is considered unlikely.

Instead, infections usually occur after someone consumes contaminated food or water.

That distinction has helped investigators focus primarily on produce suppliers instead of restaurants or individual locations.

Should Disney World Visitors Be Concerned?

For most guests, the answer is probably no, but staying informed makes sense.

There is currently no recommendation to avoid dining at Walt Disney World, and there is no evidence suggesting Disney restaurants present any greater risk than restaurants elsewhere in Florida or the United States.

Guests who want to exercise extra caution may choose to:

  • Wash fresh fruits before eating when possible.
  • Consider cooked vegetables instead of raw salads.
  • Practice frequent handwashing with soap and water.
  • Seek medical care if severe diarrhea develops during or after a vacation.

Health officials also emphasize that alcohol-based hand sanitizer is not effective at removing Cyclospora. Washing hands with soap and water remains the preferred method.

The Investigation Continues

Federal and state investigators are still attempting to determine exactly what food source is responsible for the growing outbreak.

Nationally, health officials have confirmed hundreds of cases across more than half of the country, while additional suspected infections continue to be investigated. In Florida alone, cases have climbed steadily throughout the summer, though no single supplier, farm, or manufacturer has yet been identified.

For Disney World visitors, the biggest takeaway is that the outbreak has not been connected to the resort. Still, with fresh produce remaining under scrutiny and many travelers adjusting their dining habits out of an abundance of caution, it’s another reminder that even during the Most Magical Place on Earth, staying aware of current health advisories can be just as important as packing sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes.
