EPCOT and Magic Kingdom Become Historically Empty in 2026 Update

Disney World officially kicked off one of its wildest summer days of 2026 today, and honestly, the crowds were never going to be normal.

Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, guests packed Sunset Boulevard before sunrise as Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets officially opened to the public for the first full regular operating day. Long before many families even made it through security, massive rope drop crowds had already formed around the attraction as guests rushed to experience Disney’s newest coaster overlay.

At the exact same time, Disney’s Animal Kingdom debuted Bluey’s Wild World as part of the company’s “Cool Kid Summer” push. Families immediately flooded Rafiki’s Planet Watch to try experiencing the brand-new Bluey offering, which currently operates using a Virtual Queue system. The demand was expected, but seeing just how quickly families moved toward Animal Kingdom this morning still surprised a lot of guests.

And then there is the bigger picture.

Cool Kid Summer is now officially underway across Walt Disney World. Disney has been heavily marketing the initiative toward families with younger children, and the combination of limited-time entertainment, character offerings, new experiences, and summer vacation travel created the perfect recipe for crowd spikes across multiple parks simultaneously.

So if you are heading to Disney World this week and want to avoid the chaos, the strategy may feel backward.

The best parks to visit right now might actually be EPCOT and Magic Kingdom.

Hollywood Studios Is the Center of the Storm Today

This is one of those rare Disney days where crowd patterns become incredibly obvious very quickly.

Hollywood Studios instantly became the biggest draw at Walt Disney World this morning because of the Muppets coaster opening. Disney fans have spent months following construction updates, preview reactions, ride testing, Lightning Lane changes, merchandise releases, and queue modifications tied to the reimagined attraction.

Now that regular guests can finally ride it, everybody wants to be there at once.

That creates a domino effect throughout the entire park.

Even guests who are not planning to ride the coaster immediately still end up inside Hollywood Studios because they assume it is the “must-do” park today. That means longer wait times at attractions like Slinky Dog Dash, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, and Tower of Terror almost immediately after park opening.

Dining reservations become harder to grab. Mobile order windows disappear faster. Walkways become more congested. Even transportation starts feeling slower when that many people arrive at one park during the same morning rush.

Hollywood Studios was already one of Disney World’s most crowded parks on normal summer days. Adding a major coaster opening on top of Cool Kid Summer made today especially difficult.

Animal Kingdom Suddenly Became a Family Hotspot

Meanwhile, Animal Kingdom is experiencing a very different type of crowd problem.

Bluey’s Wild World is aimed directly at families with younger children, which happens to be the exact audience Disney has been aggressively targeting this summer. Parents with toddlers and elementary-aged kids immediately prioritized Animal Kingdom once Disney confirmed Bluey would officially debut.

The challenge is that Rafiki’s Planet Watch was never designed to absorb gigantic crowds all at once.

Guests have to take the Wildlife Express Train just to access the area, which creates a natural bottleneck. Once the Virtual Queue fills up, many families still head toward the train station hoping for standby opportunities, cancellations, or simply wanting to see the atmosphere surrounding the opening.

That leads to congestion in parts of Animal Kingdom that normally feel relatively calm.

There is also another issue Disney may need to monitor carefully moving forward: crowd density around some of the Bluey activities themselves.

Keepy Uppy may sound harmless on paper, but when large groups of children start chasing balloons or crowding together in tight spaces, things can become chaotic very quickly. Parents already know how unpredictable young kids can get in high-energy environments, especially during Florida summer heat.

Animal Kingdom already struggles with narrower pathways in certain sections of the park. Adding huge Bluey crowds into the mix changes the feel of the entire park operation.

Why EPCOT May Be the Smartest Choice Right Now

Ironically, EPCOT may quietly become Disney World’s safest crowd escape during this massive summer kickoff.

The park simply does not have one huge headline attraction pulling everybody into the gates this week.

That matters more than people realize.

When Disney fans feel pressure to prioritize Hollywood Studios for the Muppets coaster or Animal Kingdom for Bluey, many skip EPCOT entirely. That spreads crowds away from the park and creates a much more relaxed atmosphere overall.

EPCOT also handles crowds better than almost any Disney World park because of its sheer size.

World Showcase absorbs guests naturally throughout the day. Families spread between countries, restaurants, rides, shopping areas, and entertainment spaces rather than stacking into one concentrated area. Even on busy days, EPCOT can still feel manageable simply because people disperse so efficiently.

Attractions like Spaceship Earth, Living with the Land, Journey Into Imagination, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, and Gran Fiesta Tour often maintain reasonable wait times compared to the chaos happening elsewhere.

Even bigger rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and Frozen Ever After may end up seeing slightly lighter afternoon demand if enough guests continue prioritizing other parks first.

There is also another advantage: EPCOT naturally attracts a different crowd demographic.

Many guests visiting EPCOT today are adults, festival fans, or families moving at a slower pace. That creates a calmer overall atmosphere compared to the high-energy rope drop madness currently happening at Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.

Magic Kingdom Could Also Be Surprisingly Manageable

This sounds completely backwards, but Magic Kingdom may quietly benefit from all the attention shifting elsewhere.

Normally, summer crowd conversations revolve around Magic Kingdom because it is Disney World’s flagship park. But today feels different.

The Muppets coaster opening pulled thrill seekers toward Hollywood Studios. Bluey pulled young families toward Animal Kingdom. That leaves Magic Kingdom in an unusual middle ground where attendance may feel more balanced than expected.

Will it still be busy?

Absolutely.

It is Magic Kingdom in summer.

But there is a major difference between “normal busy” and “opening-day disaster busy.”

Families who want a traditional Disney day filled with classic attractions, parades, fireworks, and steady ride availability may actually have a smoother experience at Magic Kingdom than they would elsewhere today.

It also helps that Magic Kingdom simply has more attractions than any other Disney World park. Crowds naturally spread across Adventureland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Liberty Square, and Frontierland rather than clustering around one single new offering.

That makes a huge difference operationally.

The Smart Disney Strategy This Week

Sometimes the best Disney strategy is avoiding whatever everybody else thinks they need to do immediately.

Yes, the Muppets coaster is drawing huge crowds. Yes, Bluey’s Wild World is one of Disney’s biggest family additions in years. And yes, Cool Kid Summer is officially underway.

But that does not mean you need to force yourself into the busiest possible parks on the busiest possible day.

EPCOT and Magic Kingdom may not feel like the obvious choices right now, but they could easily provide the better overall vacation experience this week. Less stress, fewer crowd bottlenecks, easier dining access, and more breathing room honestly sounds pretty appealing during one of Disney World’s most chaotic summer openings in years.
