Today marks a thrilling milestone for Disney Cruise Line as Spider-Man and his mischievous Spider-Bots officially took their place on the stern of the Disney Destiny—making history as the first-ever Marvel character to grace the back of a Disney Cruise Line ship.

Lifting a Legend into Place

In a carefully choreographed operation at the Meyer Werft shipyard, cranes hoisted the stunning sculpture high above the decks before it was securely mounted to the ship’s stern. This installation is a key design moment in the ship’s development, as the stern character is a defining feature for every Disney Cruise Line vessel, embodying the ship’s spirit, story, and unique personality.

For the Disney Destiny, that personality draws inspiration from the battle between good and evil, and who better to represent the heroic heart of that story than the web-slinging Spider-Man himself?

The playful design features Spider-Man in action as he tries to wrangle a handful of his trusty Spider-Bots, who are—naturally—causing a bit of chaos as they “help” decorate the stern. The dynamic pose and whimsical composition showcase the light-hearted energy that has made Spider-Man one of Marvel’s most beloved Super Heroes.

A Word from the Imagineers

Walt Disney Imagineer Jay Abruzzese, principal production designer, was previously featured in a behind-the-scenes video where he reviewed the final state of the stern characters, including the paint, sculpting, and intricate details.

As part of the creative process, he also shared a fun fact—Spider-Man’s shoe size is a Men’s 37. His involvement reflects the close collaboration between Imagineering and the shipyard team to ensure the design stays true to the storytelling vision for the Disney Destiny.

Behind the Scenes and Beyond

Disney Cruise Line shared a behind-the-scenes video of the installation process on social media, giving fans a first look at the intricate sculpture and the team effort that brought it to life. From conceptual design and engineering to painting and final placement, every detail was carefully crafted to reflect the Marvel spirit and Disney magic.

Looking Ahead to the Destiny’s Debut

As the Disney Destiny moves into its final construction phases ahead of its inaugural voyage, this heroic new stern character sets the tone for the adventures that await onboard. With Spider-Man now watching over the ship—and maybe spinning a few webs along the way—the Destiny promises a cruise experience that’s not only magical, but truly amazing.
