Disney Fans Torn Over Mother Gothel Movie Rumor

In 2010, Walt Disney Animation brought the story of Rapunzel to life with the release of Tangled. The film starred Mandy More as Rapunzel, a princess who was kidnapped as a baby by the evil Mother Gothel. Mother Gothel kept Rapunzel in a tower and raised her, all the while using Rapunzel’s magical hair to stay young.

One day, thief Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi) climbs into Rapunzel’s tower, and she decides to leave the tower with him and see the floating lantern festival that she has only watched from her window. During their journey, Rapunzel learns that she is actually the missing princess and confronts Mother Gothel.

Of course, this is a Disney movie, so Rapunzel defeats Mother Gothel, is reunited with her parents, and finds love with Flynn, AKA Eugene Fitzherbert.

Tangled was an absolute hit with fans and spawned a short film, Tangled Ever After (2012), an animated television movie, Tangled Before Ever After (2017), and a TV series, Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.

As most Disney fans know, Disney has been turning many of its popular animated films into live-action remakes in recent years. Earlier this month, it was confirmed that a live-action Tangled movie was in the works, with The Greatest Showman (2017) director Michael Gracey at the helm.

While the focus of Tangled is on Rapunzel, rumor has it that Disney is considering making a film that revolves around another major character — Mother Gothel.

Now, it is important to note that these are just rumors, and Disney has not confirmed anything at this point. We don’t know if the movie will be animated or live-action, if it will tell her version of what happened, or if it will be an origin story, like Emma Stone’s Cruella (2021).

Disney is reportedly considering making a ‘MOTHER GOTHEL’ film.

Fans were quick to share their opinions, and while some people were excited about the prospect of another Disney villain story, others weren’t as enthusiastic. They were mainly concerned that Disney would take an evil character and give them a backstory that would make them empathetic, much like they did with Cruella.

I dont want a backstory about how Mother Gothel is secretly a misunderstood woman who was ruined by the royals, so she took their child as revenge. This film better not go ahead

One commenter pointed out that they thought Mother Gothel’s backstory was unnecessary, simply due to the sheer number of Tangled films and television shows. Those spin-offs already allowed Disney to dig deeper into the popular villain.

Oh ffs….You know, you don’t have to give everyone their own prequel film, Disney. I like Mother Gothel but we never needed to know what her life was like before Rapunzel. She was a woman desperate to remain young and thus kidnapped and locked a child in a tower- (Cont.)

…for her magical hair. What more do we need? Anything else was touched upon in Tangled the series perfectly. I dunno, I really try to be positive but it feels like Disney has just gotten lazy. Why try new ideas when you can just expand on an existing series or remake it? (Cont)

Of course, as we said, there were people who were excited about the potential for another Disney villain film. Cruella was exceptionally well-received, and fans loved seeing Emma Stone transform into the iconic villain. So, it’s possible that Disney could create another winning villain by diving deeper into Mother Gothel’s story.

In the DVD that I have of Tangled there was an early/alternative motive established, where Gothel had the flower grown in her own garden and refused to give into the guards as they asked for it. I’m kinda glad they scrapped that so there’s less of a reason to sympathize with her.

As for a whole film about Mother Gothel, I think it would be really neat to see how she got to know about the magic of the flower and how to harness that. Or even all of Tangled but what she did off screen.

Some people even began begging Disney to cast a beloved actress in the role — Kathryn Hahn. Hahn is already a member of the Disney family, as she is the star of the hit Disney+ Marvel series Agatha All Along.

PLEASE PLEASE AN ENTIRE FILM WITH KATHRYN HAHN AS MOTHER GOTHEL AND AS THE MAIN CHARACTER. THIS IS KATHRYNS UNIVERSE NOW.

What’s even more exciting is that Hahn appeared to be interested if Disney reached out to her about the role! In a red-carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hahn seemed excited about the prospect.

Kathryn Hahn just might be on board to play Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of ‘Tangled’!

At this point, this is all speculation and hope or disappointment, depending on how you feel. With the live-action Tangled in the works, it is unlikely a Mother Gothel movie would be coming any time in the near future. However, if Disney thinks they can make another hit villain story, then a Mother Gothel movie might be coming down the pike.
