The upcoming Harry Potter television series headed for HBO and Max is technically a reboot. While it’s simply another adaptation of JK Rowling’s seven books, many fans will view the new Wizarding World addition as a direct remake of the eight Harry Potter films.
Remakes or reboots are typically free to do as they please and, depending on the creatives involved, aren’t usually cut-and-paste copies. However, Warner Bros. has promised that the Harry Potter reboot will be a more “faithful adaptation” of the books than the films.
This makes sense considering the series will span seven seasons (reportedly over a period of 10 years), each dedicated in its entirety to one book; a luxury that the films, each some two hours-plus in length, couldn’t afford to indulge, which led to inconsistencies throughout.

As such, the new series is very unlikely to venture beyond the boundaries of Harry Potter canon. Presumably, it will follow each book cover to cover — perhaps not as religiously as fans might expect, but bound to the pages of its source material more than the films, nonetheless.
However, while the Harry Potter reboot is seemingly confined to a long established narrative, another upcoming Wizarding World remake has taken liberties with some of its characters. In fact, when you stop to think about it, it makes no sense whatsoever.
You might roll your eyes at the fact we’re talking about the upcoming video game “Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions” (2024), but the iconic magical sport-centric title is set to feature a character that only exists in a much earlier part of the Wizarding World timeline.

It has been confirmed that Sebastian Sallow, the Slytherin student introduced in last year’s open-world video game “Hogwarts Legacy” (2023), will appear in “Quidditch Champions” in the form of a “SEBASTIAN SALLOW HERO SKIN” and “SEBASTIAN SALLOW’S WAND.”
While these are just bonus features, it’s still a bit weird. Or perhaps rather curious.
Is Warner Bros. trying to appease fans who aren’t happy with the fact that “Hogwarts Legacy” didn’t feature Quidditch? Or are they testing the waters on the current popularity of the open-world title because of those rumored plans of a film adaptation? Or maybe one of the spinoff shows set to follow the Harry Potter series they’ve alluded to is Hogwarts Legacy?
