A Star Wars remake is happening.

There are many things from the faraway galaxy in need of a remake. For many fans, this admission might be so painful they might be left wailing like a Wookiee who’s just stubbed their toe, but The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978), the sequel trilogy, and a handful of the live-action Disney+ television shows are just a few examples.

However, the franchise is actually no stranger to remakes. There is a remake of The Star Wars Holiday Special (in LEGO form, that is), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 — 2020) is a remake of the 2D animated miniseries of the same name, and how many times has the original trilogy been “digitally remastered” with new scenes added in?

Hearing the words “Star Wars” and “remake” or “reboot” in the same sentence is enough to have any fan reach for their plastic lightsaber and launch a deadly assault on their DVD or Blu-ray collection in a fit of rage. But hold your Banthas — we have some good news.

The franchise is also no stranger to video game remakes, with the Battlefront series being the most recent example. Now, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) AKA KOTOR is being given new life (no, not through cloning or dark magick).

Yep — somehow, KOTOR has returned.

Per StarWars.com, here’s the official synopsis for the 2003 version:

It is four thousand years before the Galactic Empire and hundreds of Jedi Knights have fallen in battle against the ruthless Sith. You are the last hope of the Jedi Order. Can you master the awesome power of the Force on your quest to save the Republic? Or will you fall to the lure of the dark side? Hero or villain, savior or conqueror… you alone will determine the destiny of the entire galaxy!

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (TBA) will be a modernized reboot of the original 2003 role-playing video game. But since the project was announced in 2021, which even came with a promising cinematic trailer, fans have had to contend with all sorts of delays.

But KOTOR has changed hands a few times since that trailer three years ago, and has been killed and then resurrected more times than Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious. Now, following its departure from Embracer Group, developer/publisher Saber Interactive, which is also behind the upcoming first-person action-adventure game Jurassic Park: Survival (TBA), has given a very promising update on the seemingly limbo-bound game.

In an interview with IGN, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch revealed that Knights of the Old Republic is in active development, saying, “It’s clear and it’s obvious that we’re working on this. It’s been in the press numerous times. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.”

While no release window was offered, it’s still reassuring to hear that Knights of the Old Republic AKA KOTOR isn’t stuck in some faraway cyberspace like it has been for three years. The real question is, will it be worth the wait, or will fans be left wanting another remake?

In the meantime, it’s definitely worth getting far more excited about the upcoming third-person open-world video game Star Wars Outlaws (2024), which hits shelves later this year. Check out the official cinematic trailer for Outlaws below, per Ubisoft:

Per Ubisoft, here’s the synopsis:

Experience the first-ever open-world Star Wars game, set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Explore distinct planets across the galaxy, both iconic and new. Risk it all as Kay Vess, a scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted.

If you’re willing to take the risk, the galaxy is full of opportunity.

Outlaws will be released on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

There’s no release date for Knights of the Old Republic.
