Like a late-night comedy host who refuses to vacate the stage, Joker: Folie À Deux (2024) has been under the spotlight since it was announced by director Todd Phillips in 2022.

For a few years, a sequel to the seemingly standalone Joker (2019) was unlikely, while many fans felt conflicted: on the one hand, they wanted the psychological thriller to remain forever sacred, but at the same time, they wanted to see more of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck.

Now, not only is the sequel actually happening, but it’s also a musical. Or a “jukebox musical,” as per a recent report, making the film similar to the likes of Mama Mia! (2008), which reinterprets several well-known songs instead of using original numbers.

Joker: Folie À Deux sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck after his “transformation” into the Clown Prince of Gotham in the 2019 film, in which the city erupts into chaos after he kills comedy show host Murray Franklin (Robert DeNiro) live on air.

The film also stars iconic popstar Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn (best known in film for 2018’s A Star Is Born), who was recently portrayed by Margot Robbie in the DC Universe films Suicide Squad (2016), Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021).

Casting Gaga as Joker’s love interest came as no real surprise to fans. The award-winning singer/songwriter/actress will bring Harley Quinn to life in ways we’ve never seen, and now, we finally have our first audio preview of her character from the upcoming sequel.

In an audio snippet with a slideshow gallery shared by the movie’s official TikTok account (via Deadline), Lady Gaga can be heard saying, “You can do anything you want… you’re Joker.” In ramping up attention for the film, this reveal coincides with a brand-new official movie poster that shows Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) and Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) dancing beneath the caption “The world is a stage.”

The poster also reveals that the trailer will premiere on April 9. Check it out below, per the official X/Twitter account (Joker Movie/@jokermovie):

Joker was an instant hit with audiences and critics when it was released in theaters in 2019 and grossed over $1 billion worldwide against an estimated budget of $55M — $70M. The sequel, however, has a much bigger budget, which is said to be around $200M.

Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker, Lady Gaga as Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, and Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung and Harry Lawtey in undisclosed roles.

The film will be released in movie theaters on October 4, 2024.
