A new The Land Before Time sequel just got an exciting update.

Everyone loves dinosaurs, no matter where they’re from or how old they are. But when it comes to dinosaur movies, the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise gets all the attention — and rightly so, considering it has dominated the genre for 31 years and counting. It’s also no surprise now that there are three Jurassic sequels in the works.

However, if you cast your mind back before 1993, the year Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi blockbuster transformed cinema as we know it, the acclaimed director was involved with another prehistoric adventure that has also stood the test of time.

From Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, The Land Before Time (1988) is an animated family adventure film that follows a group of young dinosaurs as they try to navigate a new world following a devastating cataclysmic event.

Leading the group is Littlefoot the Sauropod (Gabriel Damon), and in tow are his new-found friends, Petrie the Pteranadon (Will Ryan), Ducky the Parasaurolophus (Judith Barsi), Spike the Stegosaurus, and Cera the Triceratops (Candace Hutson).

Jurassic Park (1993) director Steven Spielberg and Star Wars creator George Lucas were executive producers on the film, which was directed by Don Bluth — then best known for the animated film An American Tail (1986) — with a screenplay by Stu Krieger.

Now, Krieger, 72, who recently published his new book Raft (2024), has been fielding questions from fans about the 1988 classic on his TikTok account.

Krieger answers many questions, from explaining how Cera’s name is pronounced to why he named leaves “Tree Stars” in the film. However, one fan asks if he’d “ever consider doing a movie if done in the OG [original] animation of them [the characters] being older?” While Krieger said he’s currently focused on writing more books, he added, “But, you know, when it comes to another [The] Land Before Time, I’m someone who never says never.”

So while a sequel isn’t in the works, it’s still promising to hear that it isn’t out of the question.

That said, the idea of a sequel to The Land Before Time probably wouldn’t go down well with most fans (although these days it would likely be referred to as a “reboot”). However, many are always surprised to learn that it already has thirteen straight-to-video sequels and an animated television series.

But then there’s the question of a live-action remake that could be done similarly to Disney’s The Lion King (2019). While not owned by Disney, it’s probably only a matter of time before The Land Before Time gets the modern live-action treatment.
