Star Wars has seen an impressive and immense evolution since George Lucas’s day, but can Taika Waititi top Dave Filoni and John Favreau?

From A New Hope (1977) to Rian Johnson’s The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the Star Wars franchise has taken viewers from the comfort of their own planets to a galaxy far, far away for decades. Since George Lucas first put pen to paper at Lucasfilm and crafted his phenomenal space opera, dozens of other creators have pitched in to shape their own corner of the universe, and now Taika Waititi has stepped up to the plate.

The director of films such as What We Do in the Shadows (2014), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Jojo Rabbit (2019) threw his hat in the Star Wars ring after playing the role of IG-11 in The Mandalorian, and it was recently confirmed that he would also be directing his own chapter of the ongoing saga. Like most big projects, however, this one is undoubtedly going to take a while.

The current state of the franchise is thriving on the success of the series on Disney Plus like The Mandalorian, Andor, and Ahsoka. But as much as fans are in love with the Filoni-verse, the studio will have to make some cinematic sooner or later, and Star Wars already has its next director waiting in the wings.

Waititi was previously rumored to be one of the many collaborative minds behind the next entry into the iconic sci-fi series, but it was eventually confirmed that he was in the director’s chair. However, the filmmaker broke his silence on the matter in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.

He stated,

“At the moment, I’m still developing something with them. Like me, they have a lot of projects going on. I think they’re gonna push it until I finish these other projects… I’ve got about four other scripts that I’m trying to finish. My thing is, I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don’t want to rush this movie.”

Waititi’s update on the film’s status is undoubtedly reassuring to a point, especially given some of the criticism lodged against Kathleen Kennedy and Disney’s trilogy. That said, fans might have to wait even longer before seeing the beloved franchise’s next cinematic entry.

Granted, anything worth doing is worth doing right, and Waititi is undoubtedly a creator many would love to see spice up the Star Wars universe. The franchise of films, movies, books, video games, and more has a very vocal fanbase, expecting nothing but the best, especially from an Oscar-winning director with his pedigree. At this point, all fans can do is wait and see what he has in store for the galaxy far, far away.
