A new Power Rangers series is due to arrive early next year, and though it will see the return of several beloved legacy characters from the original 1993 television series, it’s also set to make a significant change to the most iconic Power Ranger of them all.
Power Rangers has endured for 30 years — in fact, this year marks the 30th anniversary of the franchise. Now, a brand-new installment is set to ignore three decades of storytelling by taking things back to basics, finding itself in an alternate timeline 30 years later.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original 1993 series, Power Rangers actress Amy Jo Johnson, best known for portraying Pink Ranger Kimberly Hart, has co-written a new comic book series titled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return (2024), which reunites beloved legacy characters Jason Scott, Trini Kwan, Zack Taylor, Billy Cranston, Kimberly Hart, and Tommy Oliver, in a story that takes place in an alternate timeline 30 years later.

Per BOOM! Studios, here’s the synopsis for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return Issue #1:
In an alternate universe, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers defeated Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, but at a terrible cost… and in the wake of that tragedy, the team went their separate ways.
Twenty-two years later, the long-disbanded team reunites to mourn the losses of beloved friends, but Zack and Billy have some unexpected information to share: Jason – the Red Ranger, who has long been operating as a lone vigilante – has disappeared.
Will the remaining Rangers be able to track him down, especially with a mysterious figure in pursuit?
Per BOOM! Studios, here’s the trailer, featuring an introduction from Amy Jo Johnson:
Earlier this year, fans were disappointed when Johnson didn’t return for the 30th anniversary Netflix special Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always (2023) alongside fellow legacy actors David Yost (Billy Cranston), Walter Jones (Zack Taylor), Catherine Sutherland (Katherine Hillard), Steve Cardenas (Rocky DeSantos), Karan Ashley (Aisha Campbell), and Johnny Yong Bosch (Adam Park).
The 55-minute film centers around the death of Yellow Ranger Trini Kwan, who was played by the late Thuy Trang in the original series. Following Jason David Frank’s tragic passing in November last year, Once and Always has become an even tougher watch for fans.

Johnson’s absence from the project led to rumors she’d backed out due to a pay dispute, however, she would later set the record straight online, explaining to fans that this was untrue, and that she and Jason David Frank each had their own reasons for not appearing.
Now, fans will be thrilled to see Amy Jo Johnson return to the world of Power Rangers, and will be just as excited to learn that her character, Kimberly Hart, and Jason David Frank’s character, Tommy Oliver, have a child named Olivia Hart in the alternate timeline.
Since the teaser for the new comic book series dropped last week, which showcased artwork that seemingly featured a female Green Ranger, it has now been revealed that Olivia Hart is the Green Ranger, having taken over her father’s legacy.
Amy Jo Johnson took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the exciting news along with some artwork revealing the new character. Check it out below:

This makes for a wonderful tribute to the late Jason David Frank, who was both a co-star and close friend of Amy Jo Johnson. Tommy Oliver/the Green Ranger was an instant hit with fans when he first appeared in the television series in 1993, and is a character Frank kept alive for the best part of 30 years before his tragic passing, along with the White Ranger, whom Tommy Oliver would later become.

But while the idea of a female Green Ranger is an exciting prospect for many fans, it will likely lead to some online backlash. The army of trolls, now more commonly known as the “anti-woke mob,” is yet to emerge, but when you consider the response to recent films such as The Little Mermaid (2023), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023), and Peter Pan (2023), all of which made changes to certain characters’ gender and/or ethnicity, it’s probably only a matter of time before Power Rangers becomes the latest target.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return is a Hasbro and BOOM! Studios collaboration co-written by Amy Jo Johnson and Matt Hotson, with artwork from Nico Leon. Issue #1 releases on February 7, 2024. You can support it now by visiting the official Kickstarter page.
Meanwhile, Once and Always is streaming on Netflix. Per Netflix, here’s the synopsis:
After tragedy strikes, an unlikely young hero takes her rightful place among the Power Rangers to face off against the team’s oldest archnemesis.
Check out the trailer below:
Once and Always stars David Yost, Walter Jones, Catherine Sutherland, Steve Cardenas, Karan Ashley, and Johnny Yong Bosch, who reprise their roles as Billy Cranston, Zack Taylor, Katherine Hillard, Rocky DeSantos, Aisha Campbell, and Adam Park, respectively, and Barbara Goodson and Richard Horvitz, as Rita Repulsa/Robo Rita and Alpha 5.
