Despite bringing some of the best stories into the MCU, Marvel Studios won’t wait to tell one of their most ambitious stories yet, even if waiting a few more years is better.

After Avengers: Endgame (2019), many fans wondered, “Why make more?” regarding the MCU. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has already made its point. Captain America and Iron Man, with the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Doctor Strange, were ready to take on Thanos (Josh Brolin) and the Black Order. When the dust settled, Iron Man outsmarted Thanos and snapped the villain and his army into dust.

This was the epic finale of ten years of storytelling, and while fans loved every second of it, Marvel fans knew that the MCU could tell even bigger stories. Despite launching a new saga dedicated to the Multiverse, no one was ready for Kevin Feige to announce at San Diego Comic-Con a few years back that the next finale for the MCU would be Avengers: Secret Wars (2028). It’s the crossovers to beat all crossovers.

Spider-Man, the Avengers, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four are teaming up to face a horde of iconic villains, with the Beyonder acting as the ultimate witness. With characters like Galactus and Doctor Doom, it was clear that the story was full of surprises, and while the original story has led to more recent adaptations, including incursions and the fate of the Multiverse, Marvel has one big problem.

The MCU doesn’t have an X-Men, Fantastic Four, Galactus, or Doctor Doom introduced just yet. Sure, Marvel has some plans to introduce these characters, but their stories won’t happen soon enough. The Fantastic Four will have their own movies before Secret Wars, but the X-Men have nothing on the release schedule just yet, with reports claiming that the next MCU saga will focus on mutants. If this is the case, the X-Men won’t be properly introduced before the movie, leaving Marvel with two options.

First, they could introduce a brand new super hero team in the movie and rely on quick moments to make the team feel integral to the plot, or they could re-use the cast from the Fox X-Men movies. With Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Ian Mckellan’s Magneto, Halle Berry’s Storm, Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, and more could return, and while this would be great, it would be a messy way to tell this story. MCU fans know nothing about this group, and while there have been movies about the X-Men in the past two decades, some fans might not personally like that iteration of the character.

With Deadpool 3 bringing Hugh Jackman into the MCU and reportedly bringing more of the Fox franchise into the MCU, it feels like a cheap way to tell the story. Marvel is at its best when it works with characters who have had some time to have their story told. Still, fans won’t know much about the Fantastic Four or the X-Men team before Secret Wars, and that’s a lot of characters to throw into a movie and expect fans to be emotionally invested. If Marvel wants fans to be just as hyped for Secret Wars as they were for Endgame, the best option is to wait and tell that story later when the time is right instead of rushing into another big action movie that won’t live up to what fans want.
