Disney cast members have been in negotiations with The Walt Disney Company for months now in regard to their current union contracts. Cast Members and supporters, including various Disney influencers, have been calling attention to dismal living and working conditions for weeks in light of the current situation.

The current contract with Disney Cast Members expired in October 2022, which had negotiated the current hourly base pay of $15. The original request for the new contract asked for an immediate $3 raise with incremental raises over the next few years. Disney had returned with an offer to increase $1 per hour each year until the new contract is up. Cast Members say it’s not enough anymore, with national inflation and the Orlando cost of living rising higher than their wages can keep up with. People have turned to social media to document alarming conditions, with some Cast Members living in their cars, living with several roommates, or going hungry because they can’t afford groceries and rent.

They’ve also called attention to the escalating work conditions, stating that they’re expected to work in all weather conditions from rain to high heat, are often scheduled 12 to 15-hour work days, and are dealing with Guests who are becoming more aggressive and combative.

The union members voted almost unanimously to reject the previous offer Disney extended, and met with the company again today for the first time since. In a shocking move, Disney not only doubled down on their offer, refusing to add even another cent to the wages, but they also added an amendment that reduced retroactive pay for thousands of workers, making the counteroffer worse than their original.

As tensions rise between Walt Disney World Cast Members and The Walt Disney Company, another theme park giant responded by standing with their employees. Universal Orlando Resort announced last week that they would be increasing team member wages to $17 an hour, effective starting in June 2023.
