It seems like every piece of the Disney puzzle is going digital. MagicBands are no longer complimentary for Resort Guests or Annual Passholders, instead, Disney encourages Guests to use the MagicMobile Service allowing ticket information and more to be available right on your phone in the My Disney Experience App. Mobile Food and Beverage Ordering is done right in the app. Mobile Checkout is now available at several Disney Park shops. Even Cast member compliments can be done in the app. On top of that, Disney recently launched the Disney Genie update on the app which has Guests making Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lane attraction purchases and selections right from their phone. It’s ALL in the app! And now, Disney Vacation Club Members are going to need to get used to going digital for discounts.
Currently, as Disney Vacation Club (DVC) Members, if we want a DVC discount on merchandise/food or enter the EPCOT DVC Lounge, we must show Cast Members our ID and our blue DVC membership card. They match up the name on the ID with the DVC card and check the membership expiration date. Then, the typical DVC 20% discount is applied or we gain access to the member lounge. Now, proving you’re a DVC Member will be a digital process.
Recently while at Walt Disney World, a couple of Disney Cast Members were talking about how the blue Disney Vacation Club cards are going away “soon”. Of course, we were intrigued and told more details will come, but that “everything is going to the app.” We’ve now chatted with Disney Vacation Club Cast Members online and have been informed that while details have yet to be posted, they can confirm that Disney Vacation Club Members will soon need to use a “digital card exclusively which you can access by going to ‘My DVC’ then ‘View My Membership Card'” on the My Disney Experience App. We can expect the physical DVC membership cards to go away by December 31, 2021, with the digital cards being in use as of January 1, 2022. The Cast Members online informed us more details will be released soon.
The shift to digital isn’t surprising, but we may hang on to our DVC membership card as a souvenir after December 31! In the meantime, you’ll find us sitting poolside at our home Resort (Disney’s Old Key West or Disney’s Copper Creek Villas) with a drink in hand… feeling those “Welcome Home” DVC Resort vibes.
Are you ready to say goodbye to pulling out the blue DVC card each time you need to prove you’re a member? Or is this digital change one you’re not looking forward to? Let us know in the comments!
