This year has seen the return of big blockbuster movies in theaters. Marvel Studio’s most recent outing, Black Widow (2021), brought fans into Phase 4, at least in a large-scale cinema sense. Phase 4, of course, began in January with the Disney+ television series, WandaVision before continuing on with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and now What If…?
Next month will see Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) debut before Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao’s Eternals (2021) releases in November as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio has just released its final trailer showcasing more of the new superhero slate while also including first-look scenes of Marvel’s next big villain, and the internet has thoughts.
Zhao’s Eternals will release November 5 and see a new wave of heroes take center stage. Boasting a huge cast of Hollywood names, the new Marvel movie brings the famous Marvel Comics characters out of hiding to face a global threat from the Deviants — the Eternals long-time adversaries and offshoots of the evolutionary process that formed human life.
Arguably the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, the Celestial’s warriors were tasked to never interfere in Earth events, not even in Thanos’s immense eradication of half of the universe’s population and the Avengers war against the Mad Titan. This final trailer confirmed that the Celestial’s only wanted the Eternals to intervene if the threat involved the Deviants. And their time has come.
Marvel Studios’ Eternals will welcome new characters to the MCU like Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Thena (Angelina Jolie), Ajak (Salma Hayek), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Gilgamesh (Ma Dong-seok, Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Dane Whitman (Kit Harington).
While fans have known this cast for quite some time, and Marvel Studios have certainly teased their introduction for months, this most recent trailer of Zhao’s film is the first to showcase its antagonists in action — the Deviants in their MCU debut.
One train of thought that has been attached to Eternals for quite some time is their lack of interference during the Infinity War events that saw Thanos (Josh Brolin) decimate the Universe. Now, fans finally have first-look at the creatures that will bring the cosmic beings out of hiding and what will cause them to use their incredible cosmic energy powers.
Cue the internet.
Shortly after Marvel Studios debuted its final trailer, fans took to the internet to share their thoughts of the new villain character that finally made their appearance. We knew the Deviants would play a part in this upcoming Marvel movie but the inclusion of Kro paves the way for an even darker, more sinister battle for Earth. As Marvel describes:
Kro was born to the race of Deviants, an evolutionary offshoot of humanity which is cursed with an unstable genetic code causing random characteristics to crop up every generation. Kro, was born with a number of traits that are both extremely rare among his kind and beneficial in nature
A moment in the Eternals trailer sees a unique bond between Kro and Jolie’s Thena which Marvel fans will know is a key part of the Eternals’ comic book history.
At some pointing his career, he even had a brief affair with an Eternal (Thena, daughter of Zuras), perhaps the only such liaison between the two divergent human races.
Eagle-eyed fans caught the sudden appearance of Kro and took to Twitter to contribute their thoughts. @JT_ILLITSIP shared:

Some fans compared Marvel’s next big bad character, Kro, to the DC Extended Universe’s, Steppenwolf from Justice League (2017), like this one from Charles V. (@cfsvillanueva):

On the other hand, this fan thought Kro could do with some improvements. Jack P. (@InTheBeanStalk) shared their thoughts.
Eternals looks interesting. I’m a huge fan of the lore of the MCU so its definitely caught my eye. The Deviants look awesome too. I think they’re going for an “answer to the world’s myths” approach with them and the Eternals. Kro looks a bit… off, but there’s still time to fix-

It is not unusual for scenes in trailers to be altered or even removed entirely in the final cut of the movie, so fans will have to look out for any differences when the character finally makes his big-screen debut.
While Eternals is slated for an exclusive theatrical release like its predecessor, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel boss Kevin Feige has seemingly not completely ruled out a streaming release due to industry concerns of moviegoing related to the pandemic.
