Now that Universal Studios Hollywood is once again open, Guests have been flocking to the park. Although limited capacity is only allowing in 35% of Guests at the moment, it seems that wait times are still skyrocketing. The question prevails, should Universal Studios Hollywood get a big expansion?

As we have just passed Memorial Day Weekend, a typically busy weekend for theme parks, Universal Studios Hollywood felt the full effects of the theme park demand. With wait times for most attractions sitting at 100 minutes or more for the day, Guests were stuck waiting in long lines for almost all attractions.

Twitter user therealjpand21 (@therealjpand21) showcased a photo of the wait times. The Tweet noted that a change is needed at Universal Hollywood as there are not enough options for Guests, even at a limited capacity. Jurassic World — The Ride was at 200 minutes, Revenge of the Mummy — The Ride was at 120 minutes, as well as the Studio Tour and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, and so on.

We desperately need more rides and entertainment options @UniStudios, many rides are over 100 minutes with limited capacity.

The Tweet sparked a conversation with Universal fans who shared similar sentiments. Tre Deonne Taylor (@tretaylor21) made a point regarding replacements vs. the idea of expanding and why the latter is more important.

We need more rides not replacement of rides meaning nothing should be replaced till more rides are built I think what they should do it build a ride where walking dead used to be, animal actors and special effects needs to be a ride location as well

Universal Studios Hollywood will be gaining a new land, Super Nintendo World, which could help mitigate the problem. However, with only 10 attractions and increasing demand, more may need to be done.

Universal Orlando Resort in Florida is running at a higher capacity than its sister park in Hollywood. Even with heavy crowds, wait times do not consistently hit the 100-minute mark. This is likely because the Orlando theme park has already expanded by having their original Universal Studios Florida park available to Guests and Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay.

By spreading out their Guests and having more options, not only is the theme park resort more sought out, but the separation allows Guests to have a more enjoyable experience as wait times are generally more manageable.

Over at the Universal Orlando Resort, Epic Universe will be the third official theme park at Universal Orlando Resort; however, there was no room next to the first two theme parks to build the addition. It is being built a few minutes from the property where land was available.

Universal Studios Hollywood is very limited when it comes to space to expand as the theme park is tucked away in Los Angeles. Even if they wanted to open a new theme park, it would have to be in a location that is far away from Universal Studios Hollywood. Further even than Epic Universal will be to the other Universal Orlando parks when it opens.

At the moment, Guests can look forward to Super Nintendo World, which will not only bring more space to the theme park as well as more attractions. It should also be noted that the high wait times may shrink in the future as social distancing disappears.
