As we begin to enter the holiday season, it’s a little bittersweet that Disneyland still remains closed. The majority of the resort has been closed since March due to the ongoing pandemic.
Although Disney California Adventure is about to reopen its Buena Vista Street for limited retail and dining, there is still a lot of that Disney magic that is still missing.
We can assume that going forward towards a reopening means things will be different than they were before. We’ve seen how operations are a bit different in the resorts and parks that are currently open. What’s great to see throughout these resorts — from Walt Disney World Resort to Tokyo Disney Resort to Shanghai Disneyland and more — are the new character viewing opportunities they have to offer Guests. This gives us hope for eventual character experiences for when Disneyland Reopens!
We can hopefully expect to see some sort of Character Cavalcade or Motorcade at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure! Disneyland Park does have the Main Street transportation vehicles that can hold multiple characters, as seen in the photo above. This is a photo taken of a cavalcade before the pandemic.
Unfortunately, we also know that the return of parades are impossible at this point in time. It’s also unfortunate because Disneyland had just debuted a new parade just weeks before its closure. Hopefully, we can see these beautifully crafted floats once again placed in a way that would be a perfect photo opportunity while still promoting safe social distancing. Maybe Disney will decide to incorporate some of the new Magic Happens parade floats as Character Cavalcades instead!
We’ve recently seen at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World the utilization of their waterways to create new and fun character experiences! We can definitely see Disneyland offering something similar along the Rivers of America. We know that the park could use the sailing ship Columbia and the Mark Twain Riverboat, both of which are usually used for Guests. The parks could have these 2 vessels for character experiences only and this would offer some great photo opportunities and allow for multiple characters to be featured.
We also know this is possible because the waterway is used for Fantasmic! It’s unlikely that the nighttime spectacular will return for some time due to protocol in place for health and safety reasons, and we know that the park will be refraining from offering experiences that will form crowds. So using the Mark Twain and Columbia for Character Flotillas could be a way that Guests could have a great and safe character experience.
It’s important to remember that no official date has been given for Disneyland reopening, nor has there been any announcement of character experiences. This is just what we hope to see when the parks do reopen. Below is what the Disneyland website officially says regarding character experiences and entertainment:
Additionally, select attractions and certain experiences that draw large group gatherings—such as parades and nighttime spectaculars—will return at a later date. While character meet-and-greets will be temporarily unavailable, Characters will be in our parks in new ways to entertain and delight our Guests. The Disneyland Resort will also have capacity measures in place, as well as limitations on parking and operating hours.
What character experiences would you like to see when Disneyland reopens? Which specific characters do you hope to see? Let us know in the comments!
