The Tomorrowland PeopleMover at the Magic Kingdom park has been closed to Guests since Walt Disney World began its phased reopening with Annual Passholder Previews.

While at first there was no official word regarding the ride’s status, the Walt Disney World website has now officially confirmed that the PeopleMover is Temporarily Unavailable.

Disney has yet to release an official statement on the matter, and at this time it is unclear how long the PeopleMover attraction will not be running at Magic Kingdom.

What is interesting about this attraction’s status change is that Disney has not declared that the PeopleMover was “Closed for Refurbishment” as the company did for the Walt Disney World Railroad stations.

Before the pandemic-induced closure of the Disney World theme parks back in March, the PeopleMover suffered a few maladies including a collision and the emission of smoke. We at Inside the Magic began to ask why the attraction was not getting the attention it needed.

With this context in mind, this status detail raises some questions about why Walt Disney World has not opened the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover to its Guests. The ride’s cars appear to make it easy enough to ensure physical distancing, and it appears slow enough that sanitizing would not be difficult either.

Perhaps, like the Walt Disney World Railroad, its continued closure has something to do with the TRON: Lightcycle Power Run Roller Coaster being built practically next door.

Again, Disney World has yet to give an official statement on the matter. And, at this point, only time will tell when Guests will be able to climb back aboard for the grand circle tour around Tomorrowland.

Walt Disney World describes the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover as the following:

Embark on a 10-minute tour of Tomorrowland aboard this mass transit system of the future… Board an elevated tram for a leisurely voyage through Tomorrowland. During your narrated tour, go behind the scenes of attractions like Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Space Mountain and Star Traders retail shop. See architectural models of Progress City, the prototype for Epcot… You’ll enjoy amazing up-close views of the park from a unique vantage point…Always ahead of its time, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover accelerates magnetically using linear induction motors.
