Orlando Sentinel reports that 27-year-old Yunique Smith of Stone Mountain, Georgia, was visiting EPCOT last week. The July 18 arrest report states that Smith was going through the EPCOT theme park security line accompanied by an adult man, their 7-year-old son, and their 7-month-old daughter. Disney security officials found a semi-automatic 9mm handgun “in plain view” as well as a plastic bag containing marijuana.
Soon after these items were found by Disney security, Orange County deputy sheriffs were called to the scene.
A deputy wrote in the arrest report last week that Smith’s companion wanted to change their daughter’s diaper at the time, “but since the firearm and the cannabis was still inside of the bag, I searched the diaper bag for additional illegal items.” Then, the deputy found a .45 caliber handgun at the bottom of the diaper bag.
The article published by the Orlando Sentinel states that Disney has not responded to a request for comment. Smith also was not immediately available for comment.
Firearms, ammunition, knives and weapons of any kind are prohibited.
And below is the weapons policy for the Disney Resort hotels:
Guests are not permitted to have firearms, ammunition, knives or weapons of any kind at or in Disney Resort Hotels and Disney Vacation Club Resorts, including in hotel rooms, units, vacation home villas and general public areas within the hotels and resorts.
Note that marijuana is also prohibited.
It is not commonplace, but also not extremely unlikely, for a Guest to be caught attempting to bring a gun or other weapon onto Disney property. We have reported in the past when Guests are caught and arrested after attempting to bring weapons to the Disney Parks.
