If you’ve visited the Magic Kingdom, you’ve probably noticed something that continues to baffle even the most seasoned park guests. Peter Pan’s Flight — one of the original ride concepts both in Anaheim’s Disneyland park and Orlando’s Magic Kingdom — has consistently boasted one of the longest lines in the parks.

With recent updates to the line queue, guests making their way through Fantasyland can now interact with various well known characters from the story, to pass the time. The parks have even gone as far as adding in new special effects, to keep the attraction feeling current and to add a little extra magic. So while some still view this attraction as dated,  it begs the question of why it’s able to stack up against some of the most thrilling attractions in the park.

Peter Pan’s Flight Continues To Soar In Popularity

With average wait times of over an hour, guests of all ages seem content, even excited, to patiently wait their turn to step onto one of the flying ships and be whisked away to Never Land. So what is it about this ride experience that stands the test of time and continues to appeal to both young and old crowds?

Some would argue that it’s the unique hanging track that makes stepping into the flying ships stand out enough to be exciting. Especially when being compared to other rides in the Magic Kingdom with a similar slow pace and storytelling focus. But I believe it is the nostalgia of the ride that attracts people. It’s the sense of joy we feel when the familiar characters such as Smee, the Lost Boys, and Peter Pan himself take us along their journey through Never Land.

History of Peter Pan

Living in a society that grows increasingly complex, it can feel like we are being constantly surrounded by negative things. Peter Pan’s Flight, based on the 1953 animated classic (and even further back, a novel by J.M. Barrie) is a story based on the idea of escapism and protecting our sense of childlike wonder. So it’s no surprise that this classic has appealed to wide audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The story of Peter Pan speaks to Walt Disney’s personal beliefs on holding tightly to imagination and exploring the concept of magic.

Walt once said, “Too many people grow up. That’s the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up. They forget. They don’t remember what it’s like to be 12 years old.” I believe that this resonates with people still. We all have an inner child, that craves that sense of adventure and escape from the real world. That’s why we love going to Walt Disney World!

Why Do We Connect With This Story?

So in terms of why Peter Pan’s Flight has set itself apart from the other attractions in the Magic Kingdom and even more so against it’s neighboring rides in Fantasyland, it’s simple to conclude. The story it tells is one that we can all relate to in one way or another. While soaring through this ride, we can cling to the colorful depiction of Never Land, we can root for the adventurous characters that remind us of our younger selves and we can feel transported in the process.

So the next time you find yourself in disbelief of the wait time for Peter Pan’s Flight, consider what this jubilant character means to you. Dare to re-open the door to your own “Never Land” and all of the joy that follows when you allow yourself to truly believe in magic.
