Rumor has it…

…there is a secret new Star Wars series coming to Disney+ in 2020. So says known Star Wars leaker, Jason Ward.

“A new Star Wars show is starting about now that nobody even knows about,” he says.

It will supposedly be a Lucasfilm-Marvel collaboration effort to tell the story of the Marvel Comics character, Doctor Aphra. And it already started filming. “I’m hearing it’s a Lucasfilm-Marvel venture with both companies teaming up to bring a Star Wars show to the small screen,” Ward explained. It’s not clear if Kevin Feige, who Disney recently approached to work on an unannounced Star Wars project, will be involved with the Doctor Aphra show in any way.

Okay, time out. Let’s break this down.

“Who is “Doctor Aphra”?”

So, there have been several Star Wars comic book series created and published by Marvel. We meet Doctor Aphra in a mini-series released about Darth Vader. She begins as an archaeologist working for Vader but cuts herself loose from the Sith Lord and the Empire.

Her story in the comics occurs during the time of the Original Trilogy (Luke, Leia, Han, Death Star; ya know, the OGs). But people speculate her story can extend into the Post-Return of the Jedi realm of The Mandalorian. Doctor Aphra is the only “in-canon” character that is confirmed gay.

“I normally say Aphra’s a lesbian.” -Creator, writer Kieron Gillen.

“Okay, How Legit is this Rumor?”

As far as rumors and leaks go, Jason Ward has earned some credibility for his sources. The editor of the culture website Making Star Wars apparently was the first to break the story about “Baby Yoda,” claiming that a character or multiple characters the same species as Yoda would play a role in The Mandalorian. But all that was it. So, he didn’t hit a bullseye, but he didn’t miss the board entirely either.

But remember: Marvel is making Star Wars comics and Marvel Lead Kevin Feige has gotten involved with Lucasfilm. It takes no stretch of the imagination to see that collaboration happening on a Star Wars comic, “Doctor Aphra” or otherwise. I’m not going to lie, it would be interesting to see these two team up.

If the rumors are true…

…it means that “Doctor Aphra” will also be live-action. Knowing that both Marvel and Lucasfilm love to include cameos and crossovers, I’d watch the next few episodes of The Mandalorian a little more focus than usual. We might just get our first look of The Good Doctor on the small screen.

What do you think? Does this rumor hold any weight? Why do you think they would pick Doctor Aphra of all characters? Let us know in the comments!
