Disney recently launched its Awards Consideration list for “Avengers: Endgame,” sharing online exactly which Oscars the company is hoping to win at the awards show in February. But even after numerous figures in Hollywood and fans worldwide have said that Robert Downey Jr. should win an Oscar for his “Endgame” performance, Disney isn’t campaigning for him to win Best Actor, and fans aren’t happy.
Keep in mind that nominations haven’t been solidified yet, so Disney is currently in the stage of campaigning for “Avengers: Endgame” and other 2019 films to be nominated.
For your reference, here’s the full list of Academy Awards that Disney is pushing for “Endgame” to win:
- Best Picture – Kevin Feige
- Best Director – Anthony and Joe Russo
- Best Adapted Screenplay – Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely
- Best Cinematography – Trent Opaloch
- Best Film Editing – Jeffrey Ford, Matthew Schmidt
- Best Production Design – Charles Wood (Production Designer), Tonja Schurmann (Set Decorator)
- Best Costume Design – Judianna Makovsky
- Best Makeup & Hairstyling – John Blake, Janine Thompson, Brian Sipe
- Best Sound Mixing – Tom Johnson, Juan Peralta, John Pritchett
- Best Sound Editing – Shannon Mills, Daniel Laurie
- Best Visual Effects – Dan Deleeuw, Matt Aitken, Russell Earl, Dan Sudick
- Best Original Score – Alan Silvestri
According to this list, Disney is hoping “Avengers: Endgame” will win in 12 Oscar categories…none of which are Best Actor or include Robert Downey Jr. And after fans noticed that their efforts to get Downey Jr. an Oscar might have been thwarted, they weren’t too happy about it.
Several Downey Jr. fans who think the actor should win an Oscar for his performance in “Endgame” took to social media to express their disappointment with Disney’s current Awards Consideration list. Here’s what they are saying:
But it would be even better if @ChrisEvans @MarkRuffalo @DonCheadle @chrishemsworth and @Renner4Real got involved and pushed for @RobertDowneyJr to get a Best Actor campaign. No universe for them without him.

Shame Disney isn't campaigning Robert Downey Jr for Best Actor. Dude brought his A Game every single time. Even though he'll never have that Oscar statue, at least we know he did a damn good job. pic.twitter.com/G7OcldGeDs

You forgot Best Actor and that should be the man, the legend, Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr deserves at least an Oscar nomination based solely on his monologue about how much he couldn't trust Steve when Thanos showed up in Infinity War #AvengersEndgame

Wait, Robert Downey Jr. has not been listed for best actor? Are they out of their minds?

It’s safe to say fans everywhere are, for the most part, pretty upset that it looks like Downey Jr. won’t be getting an Oscar nomination. But as some have pointed out, it’s possible that Disney doesn’t want to play favorites when it comes to the Best Actor award. Like the other “Avengers” films, “Endgame” had an ensemble cast. Even though Downey Jr. gave arguably the best performance in the entire film — and even though it is his character who ultimately saved the world — some argue that nominating him could alienate the rest of the cast.
Still, given that Iron Man is the hero who truly anchored the “Avengers” films. And we’d be lying if we said we didn’t love him 3000.
