Back in July, we shared the news that a group of fans was creating a live-action film sequel to Disney’s classic ’90s cartoon Recess. Well now you’re in luck, because the short film is now available for viewing online!
Fans of the original animated shoe Recess will love reliving it in live-action form. So many of us grew up watching the show on Disney Channel, but after it ended we were left wondering what could have been. What kind of teens did the kids of Third Street Elementary turn out to be? Would they still have the same relatable personalities and go through similar trials and tribulations as we did?
Most of the fans of the original ’90s show Recess are all grown up now and out of high school, but we can still reminisce and think about what could have been. Luckily, one group of dedicated fans has created a live-action sequel to the original cartoon to show the lives and personalities of the original elementary pals we know and love.
The film is inspired and hilarious, with references back to the original series in the most subtle way. We even caught a hidden Mickey in one scene! The music is fantastic, the acting is superb, and the cinematography could make anyone believe this film was actually made for Disney Channel.
To catch you up, here’s how the creators of the live-action reimagined Recess described their project:
Picture 10-year-old you sitting in front of the TV, watching TJ, Spinelli, Gretchen, Vince, Mikey, Gus, Randall, the Ashleys and the rest of the colourful cast at 3rd Street Elementary School getting up to their usual hijinks. You lay your head to rest that night and dream about being part of this group and then awake 20 years later and think: “Hey, I wonder what happened to the Recess gang when they went to high school?” Well, YOU’RE WELCOME, because we’re here to answer that question for you!
Recess, a Walt Disney animated series created by Paul Germain & Joe Ansolabehere was an epic show that blew our minds as kids. Nothing beat coming home after school to wind down after a long day, sipping grape juice boxes and watching the adventures of TJ and the gang.
Fast forward 20 years and we’re still die hard fans of Recess and aren’t afraid to admit that we still binge watch episodes. It’s as timeless as iconic shows like The Office and Friends!
Yet one question continued to haunt us – what happened to the gang after 4th grade?
Well we’re here to answer that question for you! As filmmakers, we want to explore a more grown-up version of the show – same characters, different issues. A live action, re-imagining of the gang in a high school setting tackling current issues like love, peer pressure, social media, identity, etc.
Featuring an all-star cast, we want to bring an inspired, 11 page script to life for YOU, the show’s diverse fanbase.

We won’t spoil the film before you watch it, but we will say that it ends on a pretty massive cliffhanger, which leads us to believe that it could turn into a series. We don’t know for sure how many live-action installments have been or will be created by these dedicated Recess fans. But if they do release more short films that are just as good as this one, they may be our favorite live-action Disney films yet (even though they are not even made by Disney).
