One of Universal Orlando Resort’s most iconic attractions is getting another major upgrade, and guests visiting Islands of Adventure this year will notice the work isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Jurassic Park River Adventure has already been closed for months as part of an extensive refurbishment project, but Universal continues revealing just how much of the attraction is being rebuilt behind the scenes. The latest construction milestone involves replacing one of the ride’s most recognizable features, adding to a growing list of improvements taking place during the lengthy closure.

For fans who have been eagerly awaiting the attraction’s return, the newest update offers another glimpse at the scope of the project. While many expected routine maintenance, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Universal is taking advantage of the extended downtime to tackle several major infrastructure projects at once.
Another Major Replacement Is Underway
The latest visible construction focuses on the attraction’s distinctive entrance roof, which has stood over Jurassic Park River Adventure since the ride debuted with Islands of Adventure in 1999.
Recent photos from the construction site show crews removing much of the aging roof material from the entrance structure. The familiar tan shingles have been stripped away across large sections, exposing the black sheathing underneath while portions of the decorative green tiles remain near the top of the spire.

Work isn’t limited to the attraction itself, either. Universal has also removed roofing materials from Jurassic Outfitters, the ride’s exit gift shop, where fresh weatherproof sheathing now covers much of the building as construction continues.
Although guests won’t notice dramatic changes once the ride reopens, replacing these weather-worn structures should help preserve one of Islands of Adventure’s most recognizable themed areas for years to come.
The Roof Is Just One Piece of a Much Bigger Project
The roof replacement is only the latest chapter in what has become one of the attraction’s largest refurbishment efforts in years.
Earlier this spring, crews were spotted replacing sections of the attraction’s ride track, another significant investment that demonstrated Universal’s commitment to keeping the nearly three-decade-old attraction operating reliably.
Taken together, the new track work, roofing replacement, and gift shop refurbishment paint a picture of a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple maintenance closure.
Instead of focusing on one isolated repair, Universal appears to be refreshing multiple components of the attraction during a single extended downtime. That approach helps minimize future closures while ensuring several aging systems receive attention at once.
For longtime fans, it’s also an encouraging sign. Jurassic Park River Adventure remains one of Islands of Adventure’s signature attractions despite the arrival of newer experiences like VelociCoaster. Investing in both the ride system and its surrounding structures suggests Universal still sees tremendous value in maintaining the classic adventure.
Guests Will Need To Wait a Little Longer
Jurassic Park River Adventure originally closed in early January for what has become an approximately 11-month refurbishment.
According to Universal Orlando’s current operating calendar, the attraction is scheduled to remain closed through November 19, with a planned reopening on November 20. As always, refurbishment schedules can change if construction timelines shift, but that is the current target date.
When the attraction returns, many guests may never realize just how much work happened behind construction walls. From new ride track to a rebuilt entrance roof and updates to Jurassic Outfitters, the project extends far beyond cosmetic touch-ups.
After 27 years welcoming guests into the world of dinosaurs, Jurassic Park River Adventure is receiving the kind of large-scale maintenance needed to preserve one of Universal Orlando’s most beloved water rides. While waiting nearly a year for its return hasn’t been easy for fans, the growing list of improvements suggests the extended closure will leave the attraction in better shape for many seasons ahead.

Other Closures To Know at Universal Orlando Resort
If you’re planning a trip to Universal Orlando Resort later this year, Jurassic Park River Adventure isn’t the only attraction affected by construction or maintenance. Across Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay, several experiences are temporarily unavailable while others have closed permanently.
At Universal Studios Florida, Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show remains closed following an extensive refurbishment that began on May 12, 2026. The longtime live show is expected to return sometime later this year. Finnegan’s Bar & Grill has also been closed since January for structural and interior renovations, with Universal currently targeting a Winter 2026 reopening. Meanwhile, DreamWorks Land is seeing a much shorter interruption. Both Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp and Po Live! are temporarily unavailable while Universal completes minor adjustments, and both are scheduled to reopen on July 4, 2026.
One attraction that won’t be returning is Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. The towering coaster permanently closed in August 2025 as Universal prepares the site for a future attraction that has yet to be announced.

Over at Islands of Adventure, Jurassic Park River Adventure isn’t the only ride receiving attention. Pteranodon Flyers, located nearby in Jurassic Park, is nearing the end of its own multi-month refurbishment and is currently scheduled to reopen on July 3, 2026.
Finally, guests planning a late fall or winter vacation should remember that Universal Volcano Bay will close for its annual seasonal maintenance. The water park is scheduled to close beginning October 26, 2026, with a planned reopening on April 1, 2027.
With so many projects happening across the resort, checking Universal’s operating calendar before your visit can help you avoid surprises and set realistic expectations for what’s available during your vacation.
