Star Wars icon Mark Hamill has drawn criticism from the White House.

Mark Hamill has been politically outspoken for years, using social media to criticize Donald Trump and endorse Democratic candidates. The Luke Skywalker actor backed Joe Biden during the 2020 election and publicly supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 race, frequently posting about voting rights and American democracy.

His political commentary has often sparked backlash from conservative commentators and sections of the Star Wars fanbase. Hamill has mocked Trump online multiple times, including reading the former president’s posts in the voice of the Joker, and has defended celebrities speaking publicly about political issues.

But after the actor’s latest comments, the White House has issued a statement declaring that Hamill is a “sick individual.”

Mark Hamill Clashes With the White House

On May 6, Hamill shared an AI-generated image on X alternative Bluesky that appeared to show Trump lying beneath a tombstone reading, “Donald J. Trump: 1946–2024” alongside the words, “If only.”

He went on to write: “He should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes. Long enough to realize he’ll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore. #don_TheCON.”

The Trump administration’s Rapid Response 47 account has since taken to X to criticize the actor’s post.

“@MarkHamill is one sick individual,” it wrote. “These Radical Left lunatics just can’t help themselves. This kind of rhetoric is exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts in two years against our President.”

The latest assassination scare involving the president took place on April 25, when gunshots were fired near the main security screening area outside the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

Luke Skywalker Actor’s History With the White House

This is not the first time Hamill has publicly clashed with the Trump administration. Following Trump’s 2024 election victory, the actor revealed he had considered leaving the United States for the UK or Ireland before his wife convinced him to stay.

“She’s very clever. She didn’t respond right away, but a week later she said, ‘I’m surprised you would allow him to force you out of your own country,’” Hamill told The Times of London. “That son of a bitch, I thought. I’m not leaving.”

The White House later mocked Hamill’s comments, comparing him to Rosie O’Donnell, who moved to Ireland after the election.

Hamill’s latest attack on Trump also came just days after he appeared alongside former President Barack Obama in a video celebrating Star Wars Day on May 4.

The clip, released to promote the upcoming Obama Presidential Center, featured Obama and Hamill exchanging Star Wars-themed puns while discussing hopes that the center will inspire young people “born into ordinary circumstances” to create change.

In the clip, Obama tells Hamill about “a young person born into ordinary circumstances but restless, unsatisfied. A kid with big dreams. A bit of a rebel,” before adding: “They join a scrappy group of underdogs and set out to change things.”

Hamill interrupts by asking, “By blowing up a giant space laser?!” Obama replies: “Mark, this is not about you, as wonderful as you are. This is about them. This isn’t a monument to my legacy. It’s a gateway to yours.” After pitching the center as “a Force — for change,” Hamill responds in a Yoda voice: “Strong, the dad jokes are.”

Hamill has recently signaled that his time in Star Wars is effectively over, repeatedly saying Lucasfilm should move on from legacy characters like Luke Skywalker. In 2025, he said, “I had my time,” adding that the franchise should “focus on the future and all the new characters” rather than continuing to rely on original trilogy figures.

The actor has also suggested Luke’s story reached a natural ending in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and later joked there was “no way” he would return as a “naked Force ghost” after the character vanished onscreen and left his cloak behind. Hamill has still spoken positively about his de-aged appearances in The Mandalorian, saying those scenes finally showed Luke as a Jedi Master “at the peak of his powers.”
