Amazon MGM’s James Bond reboot is now in development. Dune trilogy director Denis Villeneuve is helming the new film, while Peaky Blinders‘ Steven Knight is on script duties. As for who will become the next 007, there’s been so much back and forth over the past year.
Speculation about who will next pick up the PPK has done the rounds since Daniel Craig announced that No Time to Die (2021) would be his final film. Now, everyone from Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home) to Jacob Elordi (Wuthering Heights) is being floated as a potential frontrunner. But has the studio finally found its new MI6 secret agent?

Has a Female James Bond Been Cast?
Putting the likes of Holland and Elordi aside, the idea of a female James Bond has also been put out there a few times since Craig’s five-film run came to an end in 2021.
While actors such as Craig himself and his No Time to Die co-star Ana de Armas have publicly opposed the idea, as has longtime Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and actress Dame Helen Mirren, there are many who are still curious to see what a female 007 can bring.
So then, is it high time Bond handed his duties over to a woman?

Technically speaking, that has already happened. Lashana Lynch’s Nomi took the 007 moniker in No Time to Die — which sparked backlash from some fans when it was revealed in the trailer — but she ended up reassigning it to Bond (Daniel Craig) by the end of the film.
Elsewhere in the franchise, there have been other notable female equivalents, namely Johanna Harwood in Kim Sherwood’s ongoing Double O book series.
As for future films, while Amazon MGM is rebooting the series, one wonders if Bond’s daughter Mathilde Swann from No Time to Die could one day continue her father’s legacy.

Is This Actress Really the Next 007?
However, those are completely different characters. A female James Bond would be just that. The same character but female; an entirely new and extremely bold (and divisive) take on the established, globe-trotting superspy. And this morning, Euronews Culture shared that Amazon MGM had cast Irish actress and singer Jesse Buckley as the new 007.
Buckley, 36, has risen to fame in recent years. The Men (2022) actor recently starred in Chloé Zhao’s critically acclaimed film, Hamnet (2025), which helped make her a household name, and primed her to take on a role like a female James Bond.
Of course, anyone who believed this news probably felt a moment of embarrassment (followed by relief for obvious reasons), as today is April 1, AKA “April Fool’s Day”.
Whether Amazon MGM is actually considering a female Bond remains to be seen, but it would be wise for them to stick to tradition unless it intends to alienate its target audience.

A New James Bond Has Already Been Cast
While it remains to be seen who will actually be suiting up as the next Bond, a new actor has already been cast as the character in a video game: Irish actor Patrick Gibson, best known for playing a young Dexter Morgan in the Paramount+ series Dexter: Original Sin (2024).
007 First Light (2026) also stars Priyanga Burford (M), Kiera Lester (Miss Moneypenny), Naomie Ackie (Miss Roth), Alastair Mackenzie (Q), Lennie James (John Greenway), Gemma Chan (Selina Tan), and Lenny Kravitz (Bawma).
The third-person action-adventure, developed by IO Interactive, releases on May 27, 2026.
There’s no release date for Amazon MGM’s untitled Bond reboot.
