In an unexpected turn of events, a growing online movement is calling for Denmark to purchase California from the United States—and, in the process, transform Disneyland into “Hans Christian Andersenland.”

The petition, which is marked as satirical, has now gathered over 200,000 signatures by pushing for what supporters are calling the “Denmarkification” of the Golden State, aiming to bring a little Scandinavian flair to sunny California.

A Fairytale Takeover at the Happiest Place on Earth?

The petition’s proposal suggests a complete reimagining of Disneyland, transforming the iconic theme park into a tribute to Denmark’s legendary author, Hans Christian Andersen. While Disney Parks have long celebrated Andersen’s works—most notably with The Little Mermaid and Frozen attractions—this proposal imagines a complete overhaul. The petition shares:

Have you ever looked at a map and thought, “You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.” Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality.

Let’s buy California from Donald Trump!

Yes, you heard that right.

California could be ours, and we need your help to make it happen.”

At the time this article was published, the poll had amassed over 220,000 signatures. In terms of political protests, this online petition is certainly one of the more viral and creative options.

The Petition’s Origins and the Greenland Connection

While this movement may seem far-fetched, it originated as a satirical response to former President Donald Trump’s repeated interest in acquiring Greenland—a territory of Denmark.

In early 2020, Trump openly discussed the possibility of purchasing Greenland, citing its strategic value for U.S. national security. The Danish government dismissed the idea, and now, in an ironic twist, the petition suggests Denmark should return the favor by making a bid for California.

While the idea of Denmark purchasing California remains firmly in the realm of satire, the petition has certainly caught the attention of theme park fans. For now, Disneyland remains firmly in the hands of The Walt Disney Company, but as long as fans are willing to dream, who knows what the future could hold?
