Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most popular animated series of all time, with most Millenials growing up following the adventures of Team Avatar (Aang, Katara, and Sokka) as they battle Fire Lord Ozai and the Fire Nation and falling in love with characters like Zuko, Uncle Iroh, Momo, Appa, Suki, and, most importantly, the Cabbage Merchant.

Now a new live-action adaptation has debuted on Netflix and has proved divisive among fans and critics. Despite this, it has garnered over 41.1 million views since its premiere on February 22. This has gotten fans worldwide chomping at the bit for a second season, and according to one cast member, that won’t be happening.

Today, Netflix posted a Zoom chat on YouTube featuring a majority of the cast from Avatar: The Last Airbender, including Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara), Ian Ousley (Sokka), Dallas Liu (Prince Zuko), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Uncle Iroh), Elizabeth Yu (Princess Azula), and Daniel Dae Kim (Fire Lord Ozai). Dae Kim led the proceedings with a somber announcement:

“I know one of the reasons we’re getting together is because I was talking to Netflix yesterday… They did share a bit of news with me that they asked me to share with you. It’s kind of sensitive, so I think that’s why they asked me to do it, and it may not be the news that we are expecting. I’m sorry if this is unexpected, but they are not able to announce a season two for our show.”

Naturally, this hit the cast members hard, with the camera cutting to each one of them in a state of distress. However, Daniel Dae Kim wasn’t done speaking.

“Well, they did say something else to me that I think was really important. They said we’re not able to announce a season two because they would like to announce season two AND three-“

At this point, every cut Kim off with cheers of excitement.

Fans of the franchise are excited as well, despite the mixed reception, not only because the series will finally be able to introduce fan-favorite character Toph but because they’ll know more about what to expect.

It genuinely feels like the fanbase was mostly angry because the live-action series didn’t match the animated classic, and there was no way that was going to happen. Hopefully, they’ll be able to accept this new interpretation with open arms, just like Uncle Iroh would want. Besides, if they want more animated goodness, a new movie has already been announced for 2025.
