Chris Evans does not seem to have any plans to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe any time soon, but he is still ready to defend his role as Captain America whenever he is called upon.

The former Marvel actor recently appeared at Seattle’s Emerald City Comic Con and discussed his long history with superhero movies, which kicked off with the Fox Fantastic Four (2005) movie. At the time, Chris Evans portrayed Johnny Storm, AKA the Human Torch; now that Marvel’s First Family is being rebooted for inclusion in the MCU, the role is being taken up by Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn.

Of course, his Fantastic Four role has mostly been overshadowed by his performance as Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, in the MCU. Chris Evans debuted as the character in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and swiftly became one of the linchpins of the franchise, alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor. It appears that Evans has set the character aside as of Avengers: Endgame (2019), but he still seems to feel that the MCU movies don’t get the kind of applause they merit.

At Emerald City Comic Con, Chris Evans said comic book movies “don’t always get the credit they deserve…They are these big, giant movies. There’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But the empirical evidence is in: They are not easy to make. If it was easier, there would be a lot more good ones.”
Evans also revealed that his favorite superhero movie that he has been involved in was Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), which he said involved “taking more risks, and the character felt more fleshed out. It was one of the more satisfying experiences I’ve had in my Marvel run.”

The actor did admit that he has been in a few comic book movies that didn’t really land for audiences and critics, saying, “I’ve been a part of a few that missed. It happens. Making a movie is tough. More cooks in the kitchen doesn’t make it easier. I don’t want to highlight specific films in the Marvel catalog, but some of them are phenomenal. Like independently, objectively great movies, and I think they deserve a little more credit.”
He did not specifically mention what movies he might not be as proud of, but we can probably all put a little side eye on some film that may or may not involve surfers, including silver ones.
