Upcoming passengers aboard Disney Cruise Line should prepare for a drier experience than usual.
For decades, Disney treated alcohol as something fundamentally at odds with its family-friendly image. Walt Disney famously opposed serving liquor at Disneyland, believing it attracted what he called a “rowdy element,” and Magic Kingdom remained completely dry for more than 40 years after opening in 1971.

That attitude gradually shifted as Disney World expanded beyond children and families into a broader vacation destination for adults. EPCOT became the first Disney park to openly serve alcohol when it opened in 1982, eventually helping popularize Drinking Around the World culture through World Showcase and the Food & Wine Festival. Disney later introduced alcohol at Magic Kingdom restaurants in 2012, marking a major break from one of Walt Disneyās longest-standing rules.
Disney Cruise Line has also reflected that broader shift in Disneyās approach to alcohol over the years. From adults-only bars and lounges to themed cocktail experiences, alcohol has become a much more visible part of the onboard experience than many guests may associate with Disney historically.
But guests joining a Disney Cruise Line next week should prepare for an unexpected alcohol ban.

Alcohol Ban Applied To Disney Cruise Line Passengers
The ban will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday, May 12, while polls remain open across The Bahamas. The restriction applies to the sale of āintoxicating liquorā throughout the country.
That will likely include Disney Cruise Lineās two private destinations ā Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point ā both of which operate under Bahamian law despite being Disney-owned experiences.

Based on current schedules, the Disney Wish is expected to dock at Castaway Cay on May 12, while the Disney Fantasy is set to visit Lookout Cay.
Alcohol service onboard both ships is still expected to continue normally, meaning guests can order booze at the likes of Nightingaleās and the Rose aboard the Disney Wish or Europa and OāGills Pub on the Disney Fantasy.
Other cruise lines are also facing the temporary restriction, including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises. Royal Caribbean confirmed it will comply with local regulations, noting that the alcohol ban applies only to sales ashore.
Magic Kingdom’s Pirates of the Caribbean tavern, The Beak and Barrel, operates under similar rules. Disney enforces a two-drink maximum per guest, with most parties limited to 45 minutes inside the lounge as the company carefully controls alcohol consumption in its once “dry” castle park.
Disneyland Paris has adopted its own quieter approach to limiting alcohol consumption. Guests at Captain Jack’s – Restaurant des Pirates have reported being unable to order alcoholic drinks without purchasing food.
