Disney announced an unexpected change for its Spider-Man ride this week.

When Disney purchased Marvel Studios in 2009, it was inevitable that its superheroes would eventually make their way to the parks.

Over time, more and more Marvel Cinematic Universe icons have crept onto Mickey Mouse’s turf, with Stark Expo taking over a section of Tomorrowland in Hong Kong Disneyland in 2017. Avengers Campus debuted at California Adventure in 2021 (after a COVID-19 delay), with its Paris iteration following in 2022.

They may bear the same name, but the two lands boast notable differences. For one thing, the version at Disneyland Resort – which will soon nearly double in size with two new rides, Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab – is home to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

Meanwhile, the thrill attraction in Paris comes in the form of Avengers Assemble: Flight Force (which isn’t exactly popular with guests).

The only shared attraction between the two lands is its Spider-Man ride. Known as Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure in Anaheim and Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure in Paris, this sees guests embark upon a tour of the Worldwide Engineering Brigade (WEB), a program funded by Tony Stark, before finding themselves tasked with helping Spider-Man (Tom Holland) track down the Spider-Bots wreaking havoc on Avengers Campus.

Disney Tests Changes on Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure

While the concept is fun, not all fans are sold on the attraction.

Since its debut at both parks, guests have criticized Disney’s Spider-Man ride for its over-reliance on screens, lack of immersion, and similarity to existing attractions, such as Toy Story Mania.

It now seems like Disney is considering making a major change to one version of the attraction, judging by testing conducted at Walt Disney Studios Park earlier this week.

According to @Cave0fWonders, Disney temporarily removed the attraction’s 3-D elements on December 26.

Guests were notified by a sign outside the attraction that read: “Exceptionally today, the web vision glasses won’t be needed.”

Fans speculate this may indicate the attraction is moving away from 3-D. This would follow a similar pattern seen on Ratatouille: L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy, which is currently closed at the same park for the removal of 3-D (plus a few other enhancements) after previous testing periods.

Disney also recently stripped the 3-D from the version of the attraction found at EPCOT, where it is known as Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.

The 3-D aspect of both attractions was divisive with fans. Some claimed that it induced motion sickness, while others argued that it added to the ride’s immersiveness.

Disney has yet to confirm any similar changes for either version of its Spider-Man attraction – but based on previous moves from the company, things don’t look good.

Do you think Disney should axe 3-D from its Spider-Man attractions?
