Universal Studios’ Halloween event, Hollywood Horror Nights, is once again attracting attention—but not entirely for the reasons organizers intended. This year, some guests have been seen using the event’s “Deathly Afraid” necklaces in ways that are causing friction among fans and fellow attendees.

Visitors Taunting Scare Actors?

Designed as a tool to signal to scare actors that a guest does not want to be frightened, the necklaces have been misused by some visitors to taunt performers, generating viral videos that have circulated online. While the necklaces are intended to enhance the guest experience by giving participants control over their scare level, the clips have sparked criticism across social media.

“The content creators abusing the no scare necklace just for content is just gross and disgusting. Please stop,” one user wrote on X, reflecting a growing sentiment among horror enthusiasts who feel that the misuse diminishes the purpose of the necklaces.

Fans argue that these stunts not only disrupt the immersive atmosphere that Hollywood Horror Nights is known for but also put performers in uncomfortable situations. Many have urged attendees to respect both the rules and the experience, emphasizing that the necklaces are designed to ensure safety and comfort—not entertainment for online content.

Should Universal Crack Down?

Despite the controversy, Universal has yet to release an official statement regarding the viral videos or any changes to necklace usage policies. For now, horror fans are left balancing their own scare thresholds with the responsibility to respect the performers and the rules of the event.
