Are we getting a sequel to The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)? There’s certainly a pattern emerging.
In 2021, Home Sweet Home Alone landed on Disney+, and in 2022, the long-awaited Hocus Pocus 2 was conjured up. That same year also gave us The Santa Clauses (2022), the follow-up to The Santa Clause trilogy.
Needless to say, Disney is no stranger to making sequels to ’90s classics. One such film that comes to mind is The Muppet Christmas Carol. But, for well over 30 years, the beloved holiday tale based on Charles Dickens’ timeless 1843 novella has been completely left alone.

The Muppet Christmas Carol Has Been Left Alone for 33 Years
There is, however, the “extended cut” version of the film, which features the song “When Love Is Gone,” and a live on-stage version. There’s even a story book based on the 1992 film. But there have been no sequels. As such, the original remains entirely untampered with.
This is hardly surprising when you consider the fact that a) the Muppet films don’t ever get sequels. Of course, most have follow-ups of sorts (or reinventions), but sequels are different things entirely. And b) Dickens’ A Christmas Carol doesn’t have a sequel to its name.

Why Hasn’t There Been a Muppet Christmas Carol 2?
Still, it’s hard to ignore just how popular The Muppet Christmas Carol is. It has long become a pastime for countless people over the holidays. A deeply cherished film that smells of nostalgia in the same way the holidays smell of pine, citrus, peppermint, and mulled wine.
There’s simply no denying its enduring legacy. We should be grateful that we’ve not had a low-effort, straight-to-streaming sequel — and we are — but it’s puzzling that such a widely loved classic has flown under the radar while residing under the Disney banner, of all things.

A Sequel to Such a Beloved Classic Is a Very Bad Idea
Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that there haven’t been conversations among fans. But the consensus is that it should be left alone. And nothing has ever been said officially. There aren’t even any rumors pointing to a potential sequel.
There are plenty of Muppet Christmas movies in addition to the 1992 film, though. There’s A Muppet Family Christmas (1987), and in the years since, we’ve had It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie (2002) and A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa (2008).
In an era where there’s an abundance of sequels and remakes, let’s just have “a thankful heart” that such a beloved classic has been perfectly preserved in time.
The Muppet Christmas Carol is now streaming on Disney+.
