Star Wars currently has only one live-action TV project in development–but could all that be about to change?

With no The Mandalorian Season 4 on the way (at least for now), Andor officially wrapped up, and The Acolyte unceremoniously cancelled, Lucasfilm only has Dave Filoni’s second season of Ahsoka in active development.
Already in the filming process, Ahsoka Season 2 is yet to score a release date for Disney+, but it can be expected that the sophomore season will follow the big screen debut of the Mandalorian in Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026).
For the first time in over half a decade, Lucasfilm officially has more Star Wars movies in active development than live-action TV shows. As well as The Mandalorian and Grogu, which opens on May 22, 2026, Shawn Levy will make his galactic directing debut with Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), starring Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary) and Mia Goth (The Odyssey).

The stripped-back Disney+ slate may be, in part, due to the backlash caused by Leslye Headland’s The Acolyte, which, for its multi-week run, was lambasted by audiences. The Acolyte drew intense criticism due to its inclusion of diverse characters and apparent changes to Star Wars lore.
However, while the “toxic” fanbase was incredibly vocal, The Acolyte drew immense adoration, too. Shortly after the cancellation news, fans petitioned for its renewal.
So, where does this leave Lucasfilm? According to a new report, it leaves them wanting to return to an old favorite.

Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+
Obi-Wan Kenobi, the six-episode limited series on Disney+, marks a triumphant return for Ewan McGregor as the titular Jedi Master, set a decade after 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III–Revenge of the Sith.
Living in exile on Tatooine under the alias “Ben,” Obi-Wan is drawn out of hiding when young Princess Leia is kidnapped, triggering a high-stakes rescue mission and a tense reunion with his former apprentice, now Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen).
Directed by The Mandalorian’s Deborah Chow and written by Joby Harold, Obi-Wan Kenobi reunites familiar faces, including Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse as Owen and Beru Lars, while introducing breakout performances like Vivien Lyra Blair as young Leia and Moses Ingram as Inquisitor Reva.

With executive production from McGregor himself and a sweeping score by Natalie Holt, featuring a new theme by John Williams, the series blends nostalgia with fresh storytelling, filling in the emotional and narrative gaps between the prequels and the original trilogy.
Though some critics noted pacing issues and a reliance on legacy content, Obi-Wan Kenobi earned generally positive reviews, praised for its performances, lightsaber duels, and emotional depth, particularly in its climactic confrontation between Obi-Wan and Vader.

Is There Going to be an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?
A second season seems more likely following a recent report. According to Daniel Richtman (via Comic Book Movie), Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 is moving forward.
“According to scooper Daniel Richtman, ‘A second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi is in development at Lucasfilm.’ No additional details were provided, but after The Acolyte split opinions and Skeleton Crew passed many people by, focusing on a well-known, beloved character seems wise,” the outlet wrote.

Back in 2024, McGregor told LADbible that he hoped for more Obi-Wan Kenobi stories.
“I don’t know. There’s been no phone call to me from Lucasfilm, or Disney saying, ‘Let’s do another one’. Obi-Wan was made as a limited series and it’s out and people like it, which I’m very, very pleased about,” the actor said during the interview.
“I hope we get a chance to do another one and I’m sure we will. I’m pretty sure, you know, I’ve got a few years yet before I’m the same age as Alec Guinness was in A New Hope. So there’s time to tell more stories in there.”

Audiences have seen a post-Season 1, pre-original trilogy Obi-Wan Kenobi before in Star Wars Rebels, where his conflict with Maul finally comes to an end. But it stands to reason that there is more for Lucasfilm to mine in this part of the timeline…
