However, Florida’s unpredictable weather can sometimes throw a wrench in those magical plans. With the state’s tropical climate, pop-up thunderstorms and even severe weather warnings aren’t unusual. But today’s situation is a bit more serious—a tornado warning has been issued near Disney World, prompting immediate safety measures for all guests.

Tornado Warning and Wind Advisory Issued for Disney World

The National Weather Service in Melbourne, Florida, issued a tornado warning for the Walt Disney World Resort and surrounding areas, including Universal Orlando Resort. The initial warning was issued at 8:35 a.m. on March 10, 2025, and was extended until 9:30 a.m., covering southwestern Lake County and northwestern Orange County.

Reports indicate that a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was spotted near Clermont and Ferndale, moving northeast at 35 mph. The warning advised guests and residents to take shelter immediately, as flying debris poses a significant risk.

Additionally, a wind advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. across multiple Florida counties, including Orange and Osceola, where Disney World is located. Guests can expect strong winds ranging from 15-20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, making outdoor activities challenging.

With safety protocols now in place, Disney is advising guests to be vigilant and stay safe. But if you’re in the parks or resorts, how can you still make the most of your time while staying safe?

How to Stay Safe at Disney World During Severe Weather

1. Take Shelter Indoors Immediately

If you’re inside a Disney park when a tornado warning is issued, head to the nearest indoor attraction, restaurant, or retail location. Disney’s large, enclosed queue areas—like those at Pirates of the Caribbean or The Haunted Mansion—can serve as temporary shelters. If you’re at a resort, stay in your room or head to the lobby for further instructions.

2. Avoid Outdoor Attractions and Transportation

With strong winds in effect, Disney could potentially suspend outdoor rides, including roller coasters and anything involving aerial movement (Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Slinky Dog Dash, etc.). Additionally, transportation options like the Monorail, Skyliner, and some ferryboats may temporarily shut down for guest safety, depending on the weather. Be sure to check the My Disney Experience app for live updates on closures.

3. Have a Backup Plan for Park Time

If your plans for an outdoor ride-heavy day get interrupted, pivot to indoor attractions like Spaceship Earth, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Many of Disney’s indoor experiences remain open during storms, providing entertainment without the risk of exposure to dangerous weather conditions.

Best Ways to Enjoy Disney World in Bad Weather

1. Explore Disney Springs

If heavy rain continues but tornado warnings lift, Disney Springs can be a great place to escape the weather. From world-class shopping to dining at indoor restaurants, there’s plenty to do without worrying about the elements.

2. Enjoy Resort Activities

Many Disney resorts offer fantastic indoor entertainment, from arcades to themed lounges. Deluxe resorts like Disney’s Grand Floridian often have live music in the lobby, while Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has great indoor viewing spots for animals at the resort’s savanna.

3. Watch Disney’s Storm Protocols in Action

While guests always hope for clear skies, it’s fascinating to see how efficiently Disney handles severe weather. From quick ride shutdowns to Cast Members guiding guests indoors, the parks have a well-rehearsed plan for keeping everyone safe.
