The Harry Potter television series is well underway. While Warner Bros. has confirmed that the eight films will “remain at the core of the franchise,” all eyes are currently on the upcoming reboot, which will be a more faithful adaptation of JK Rowling’s seven books.
However, little is currently known about the project that’s headed for the newly rebranded streaming service Max.
We know that Francesca Gardiner (HBO’s Succession and His Dark Materials and Killing Eve) is showrunner and that Mark Mylod (also behind Succession as well as Game of Thrones and The Last of Us) is onboard as an executive producer (he’ll also direct several episodes) alongside JK Rowling and David Heyman, who produced the film series, and that the show will span 10 years (although it’s only rumored to have seven seasons, so it’s possible some will be split into two).
But as for the casting and who’ll be playing the likes of Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger, your guess is as good as ours.

But now, Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also appeared in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), is the latest actor whose name is being tossed around the Great Hall.
Reliable industry insider/scooper Daniel Richtman (via SFFGazette.com) claims that the Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) actress has been offered the role of Harry Potter’s aunt, Petunia Dursley, who was famously played by Fiona Shaw in the film series (there’s definitely a strong resemblance between both actors).
Whether or not Waller-Bridge will end up filling the shoes of Harry’s horrible blood relative remains to be seen, but we think you’ll agree that she’d make fitting successor to Fiona Shaw. Ultimately, it’s up to the sorting hat at Warner Bros., so we’ll just have to wait and see.

With the series set to start filming this summer, the chances are we’ll start seeing some official casting announcements emerging from the wizarding world pretty soon.
For now, the rumor mill will continue to spin. So far, other rumored castings have included Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later, Oppenheimer) as Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort, Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London) as Severus Snape, Brett Goldstein (Thor: Love and Thunder) as Hagrid, and Mark Rylance (The BFG, Ready Player One) as Albus Dumbledore.
Warner Bros. has yet to confirm any casting.
The new Harry Potter television series is expected to stream sometime in 2026/2027. The show will be the first of many installments in the revamped wizarding world franchise.
